Wish I could be in the area (Redondo Beach) to watch. Afterward, I'd have to slip down to Naja's for a great bier or three.

He is contracted with the team for what? Another 5 years? And he can't come out to support the team's efforts before the final stage?
On the other hand, if he did show up earlier, all of the media hype would be around him and none of the other great riders would get the public exposure that they are getting. My personal thought: If he didn't steal the show in the beginning, why steal it at the end? Is he going to announce an attempt at the hour record on the track? As such an amazing physical specimen, it is a shame to have lost him to retirement. Enough babble...

I don't get it. How is it tacky? A team he's part owner of is in the race. He's also sort of a big advocate for cycling in the U.S. of A. Oh, also he used to race with a lot of the riders in the race so it would seem like he would want to visit them.

No, I think its great hes coming to support the team in their final stage. He was riding with them just last year. He's still part of the team. The public will react much like most have said but thats just what happens when amazing athletes come to a certain easily accessible place.

Lance showing up at the race is a security nightmare.
The organizers are expecting the biggest crowd imaginable. Now they have to tend to Lance.
If he's such a dedicated supporter of his former teammates, why wasn't he in San Jose? SLO? Santa Barbara? Why wait until the big finish? To snag the spotlight. Why else?

He's in a no-win or no-lose situation, depending on your views of the guy. If he doesn't show up at all he'll be criticized by some for ignoring the biggest race in this country now that he's retired... and praised by others for allowing the spotlight to be on the racers. If he shows up at every race or any race, he'll be criticized by some for hogging the spotlight... and praised by others for supporting cycling in the US. He's simply a very polarizing figure. For Lance-haters, nothing he does in a situation like this will be right, and for Lance-lovers, nothing he does will be wrong.

Why are you trying to "ruin cycling from within"?

Lance was in S.B this morning and he rode in the team car to T.O. He also said he can't be at the race tomorrow (Sunday-- Redondo).

There's nothing wrong with Lance being there, he's got a vested interest in the Tour, and if he 'steals the show' its probably the race organizers idea, not his.
Besides, if I see him, I'm going to ask him to get me Hincapie's autograph.

I was thinking that Lance would be there tommorow for sure, since Sheryl dumped him and he probably hasn't had any poon in a while, so of course he'd be out looking for fresh meat (groupies ??).

Hey, if anybody happens to run into Lance, urge him to advocate for better mainstream television of bike racing. Lance has done a tremendous amount to boost the image of cycling in America, and the people like me who were frenzied fans of an obscure European sport called "cycling" back in the 80s while my high-school classmates were all about baseball, football, and basketball, certainly appreciate that. Lance will always be around cycling in America, and it's up to us fans to rally around him in a manner that will effectivelly put the emhasis on him to maximize the public appreciation of our sport.
If Lance is showing up, then great, but if he's just smiling and signing autographs, then it's a waste. The man needs to do major advocacy work for a sport that has given him so much. Yeah, it's nice to see him in the Discovery team car as a psuedo "directour sportif" which can help Discovery to continually produce top-notch athletes, but we also need him on camera as much as possible alongside Phil, Paul, and Bob, which hopefully will all be seen not at 1:00am on ESPN2, but on prime-time ABC, CBS, or NBC.
