Ok...here is my drivetrain setup:
1. SRM Pro up front with Stronglight 10sp chainrings (come w/unit)
2. Campy record rear der 10sp (carbon). There is an adjuster barrel on the cable about 1/2 way down.
3. Campy chorus 10sp fr der
4. Campy record 10sp Ultra Carbon shift/brake ergopower levers
5. Wipperman connex 10sp chain w/ power link
6. Campy 10sp Centaur 12-25 cogset

Now to my problems.

Problem #1: I HAVE NEVER HAD THIS STUFF SHIFT NICELY!!? I have replaced cables, chains, cassettes, tuned it myself, brought it to a mechanic and gotten it tuned...nothing. The thing I notice is this, it NEVER shifts down into the 12 cog. No matter how much tweaking, tuning, turning, etc, I cannot get it to go into the 12. How can I correct this? Am I overlooking something obvious?Like I said, I have changed cables, housing, cassettes, and chains to try to fix this. If my mechanic tweaks it, it's good for about 2 shifts into the 12, then, forget about it.

Problem #2: On 2 occasions, while waiting at a red light, when I started to pedal again, I hear this "crunch". Next thing I know the SECOND chain I've bought now has a kink/dead link in it. Get this though, it's not a problem with the pins or anything like that, but rather, the roller itself now has a mini-gouge in it!?

Don't know if this is it, but I had a similiar problem with a rear derailleur on my mountain bike. Turns out that the part of the derailleur that the cable pinch bolt is mounted in was bent slightly. Not much, but just enough that it hit the parrallelogram sideplate when trying to shift to the small cog, and thus limited the derailleur's movement.

I assume your mechanic has checked your limit screws (if present -not familiar with Campy stuff) and checked your derailleur hanger alignment.

Because the spring in the derailleur is pulling it toward the small cog, you should be able to completely disconnect the cable and have it sit and run in the 12T cog. If it does not, then you know it's not cables/shifters, but something in the derailleur, hanger, or something else.

Definetly check your deraileur hanger. (that's the little tang on the right rear drop-out where the rear deraileur bolts) If the bike has EVER fallen on the right side, the hanger is what gets bent. To do a quick check, stand directly behind the bike and look at the line your chain takes from the cogs through the pulleys. The chain should come STRAIGHT down from the cogs.
Another problem may be a kink in the shift wire route. The inner wire has a bend that engages when you try to get to the 12.
OR, find a PLBS (pro local bike shop) and give them beer money to check it.

I'll get on over to the PLBS, not just the LBS. Funny...the PLBS like PBR and other cheap beer, while the LBS only likes foo-foo stuff! :-).

If your mechanic can't figure out why you can't shift into the 12 cog, he's pretty incompetant.....seriously.

That's what I was going to say too. In fact, any time you have a rear shifting problem that doesn't respond to normal tuneing, the derailleur hanger is almost always to blame.

Someone once started a thread asking for favorite bike tools. I chose my derailleur hanger alignment tool because using it makes me look like I'm a better bike mechanic than I really am.
