Need Help W/ Spindle and Bottom Bracket Install

OK - I'm building a bike for the first time ever. It's a BMX cruiser. I finally figured out how to press the American BBs in using a homemade jammy. However - when I received the bottom bracket and square taper spindle from Dan's Comp - the bearings on them were/are super tight and I had to hammer out the spindle. Is this normal? Now that I have the cups and bearings installed, the spindle won't go in. I also tried using a rubber mallet, but that only went so far. Am I doing something wrong? Any suggestions are super appreciated. Thanks!

Actually the first cup/bearing got pounded in w/ a rubber mallet. The second set - I used a long 1/2 inch bolt, a bunch of spacers, 2 nuts and 2 wrenches and created a vise of sorts. Then I just turned and turned until they pressed in.
