pedals// eggbeater - candy difference
What is the reason behind the nylon cage on the crank bros candy c pedal? Are eggbeaters just as durable?

i'm not completely sure why they put that small cage on, but for the 06 models, it looks pretty wicked with the paint scheme

they remind me of the mallet pedals for Dh. their must be a reason for the big cage on those. I suppose the yellow candys would give you something to spot if they were covered in mud.

Are the candy pedals easier to use than the eggbeaters ?

Candy is a cooler name.
The only thing I can think of for a difference is that if you have egg beaters and you hit the bottom of the pedal on a rock, you clip out...but you learn to not hit ur pedal after nutting urself on your top tube about 20 times.

The candy's are easier to pedal in tennis shoes/sandals than the eggbeaters.

I disagree. Besides the element of basic support of the platforms on the candys, often times it's easier to grab a hold of the pedal with your foot without clipping in when starting up in a low gear, on a hill or on fixie.

I run the regular eggbeaters on my mountain bike and the candy version on my fixed gear bike and my cyclocross/touring bike. The eggbeaters are slightly easier to clip in and out of because there is nothing for the shoe to drag across. The candy version spreads the contact point out a bit and is better for road riding because it doesn't give you a "hot spot" on the bottom of your foot. So unless you ride solo 24 hour races or your rides generally last longer than 3 or 4 hours, the regular eggbeater is the way to go.

I kind of like the versitility of the Crank bros mallet pedal. Anyone use this?
I wonder how much you would notice the extra weght. It seems like kind of an important spot.

I like the Candy setup quite a bit.
For technical bits, it's nice to be able to hop on the pedal without clipping in. Particularly on a long, nasty, single-track climb where I may have to dismount for parts. I like being able to restart that climb with one pedal kick - something the Candys are great for.
