what to do when you fall w/ hydration pak

alright,

this is a really silly question.

but i'm gonna ask anyway.

when i see a puddle, river, or stream. I put the 'pedal to the metal' and attempt to drill thru it. half the time its deep, my wheel gets caught in some bundle of river rocks, and i end up gasping for air...figuratively speaking.

if i purchase a camelbak hydration pak. wont my mouthpiece get messed up/dirty with every fall on wet or dry terrain?? what do u do to prevent this.

right now, i use an oakley backpack w/ two 1 liter water bottles for my 2 hour trail rides.

Just wipe the dirt away. It wont get messed up. Prevent it getting dirty: dont fall off your bike.

huh? if you're worried about that, then why are you out doing an activity that you will get wet/dirty while pursuing?

wipe it off, or not. pull water through it, and if you feel something gritty, spit it out. it's not rocket science.

(or, if you're a totally anal namby-pamby type, you can carry some sort of antibacterial crap to clean it with. h3ll, the junk is being marketed and sold in everything these days. it's just dirt, people. sheesh. and people wonder why "super bacteria" are evolving more and more? )

apologies for the snotty answer, but it's late, and i'm tired, and i felt like giving it.

Wipe it off and forget about it. It's clean dirt.

don't drink out of it after it gets dirty. then throw it away when you get home and purchase a new one. it's better to risk dehydration than get some mud near your mouth.

Be sure to wash your hands before you touch the mouthpiece. You wouldnt want to make it worse.

wipe off any big chunks, but don't spend much time

then

take the mouthpiece with the remaining grit, stick it in your
mouth and take a big pull,
and also wipe it down with your tounge and mouth. spit that out

and do it one more time, clean it with your mouth and spit that
out.

then take a sip. it should take no more than 2 wasted sips to clean
so you don't waste needed water.

Works great in theory, but not so good in practice.

My $.02: Suck the dirt down. It's good for you.

Well if your really worried about it, just carry a couple of alcohol wipes in your pak, and wipe it down good. I can understand your concern, but even in my brief mbing timeframe now, Ive chewed grit almost every outing. I've even rode with a tourniquet on my leg. hehee.

You might want to watch out for Giardia as it is found in streams out west and gives you bad farts, greasey stools and the poops. Also, avoid having anal sex with beavers.....Ok i just got done with a micro test and thought this was fitting as Giardia is carried by beavers and found in streams/water, particullarly out West. I would worry about it.

lol hilarious.

i ride too often to just suck it down. i dont want cancer or watever toxic substances in those rivers. but yeah, i guess just sucking it and spitting out the dirt water is the way to go, most efficient atleast.

I think there's two wasted steps in there and two wasted mouthfulls of water.

Stick it in your mouth, take a drink, and enjoy the grit - it adds flavor.

Just stick the mouthpiece in your ear before the crossing...that way, at least you have one clean ear.

Actually, the bacteria in the mud might strengthen your immune system. However, I don’t recommend eating mud on purpose. I'm just saying don’t sweat it if a little mud gets on your mouthpiece. Just rinse off the excess mud and you'll be fine.
