are you suppose to put primer right after it?

It depends on the conditions where you're storing it. I stored a stripped frame for nearly a year without putting anything on it when we lived in the desert (where there was no humidity or moisture), with no ill effects. On the other hand, it can begin to rust within minutes in wet/warm or wet/salty conditions (like sea air).
You can also spray it down with WD40 (or other light oil) to prevent rust until you're ready to paint.... just be sure to remove any protectant before you paint it.
