Used Santana: ID the year built?

Is there any way to determine the year a Santana tandem was built, based on the serial number? I have a seller who knows virtually nothing about his bike.
Thanks all

Bikes: Co-Motion Nor'Wester Tour, Co-Motion Primera Tandem, WizWeelz Terra Trike 3.6 Tour model

Call Santana and ask them about the serial no. I know that with Co-Motion the last two numbers in the serial no is the year the frame was manufactured. Santana would be able to tell you, good luck.

From their Web site:

How to Contact Santana
The best way to contact Santana is to call us at (800) 334-6136 or (909) 596-7570, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific time. We love talking to cyclists, and have found that a phone call is usually the fastest way for you to get the right answer.

If you would rather contact us via e-mail, we can be reached at: info@santanatandem.com

If needed, you can mail us at

Here's some information that I got from a friend who talked to Santana 5 years ago.

Serial number is 5 digits long.

1st digit is model year. "X"=2000, "Y" =2001, etc. (no letter "O")

2nd digit is frame material. "T"=titanium, "K"=TeamAl, etc.

3rd digit is frame size. 2/3=sm. 4/6=med. 7/8=lg. 9=xlg

4th&5th digit is serial number. "01"=first one built that year.

To verify, give Santana a call. They are very friendly.

Where is the serial number located on Santana tandems? I'm not seeing one on my frame, including the under side.
