ESPN Article: "Do Yourself a Favor: Watch Landis"

Nice to see some recognition. I especially liked this line:

"Landis' comeback from Wednesday's collapse was extraordinary, the stuff of legend. The only way it could have been more dramatic is if he were carrying flu serum to a remote French village."

And he's right about Barbaro, it's just a horse. I can't believe people actually sent flowers to Barbaro after the incident.

Now ESPN is noticing Landis? ESPN could have done everyone a favor by noticing before yesterday. Late to the party they are. SportsCenter couldn't even be bothered to report on Landis triumphantly re-capturing yellow on Stage 15. They've had hardly any video or reports on the Tour. They tout yesterday's hero Armstrong hosting the Espys round the clock, but have ignored the American kicking ass in this year's tour.

Now ESPN is sucking Landis' wheel, having refused to get out in front when it was needed.

I'd just like to say we don't live in Europe and don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

Better late than never... Let's face it--they didn't really give a rat's a$$ about any of Lance's victories until he rolled into Paris either.

I have been watching ESPN's "Pardon The Interruption" and they have been doing spots on Landis for at least the last week and a half. Some folks amaze me, they whine when our sport gets no coverage, then they whine when it does get coverage that doesn't fit into their grand ideas. I have faced the fact long ago that cycling will never be in the mainstream here in the USA, and I take what I can get. In this case, I welcome the bandwagon jumpers. Maybe we all should.

Cheers,

Brian

I like the article. It's clear the guy's been watching the Tour and is a cyclist himself. And he brings up great points and doesn't distract with the usual Lance talk. I thought it was a great article.

That article was spot on. Great intro, good language. Good to see.

I'm pretty much a ESPN Radio and Sports Center junkie.

I've been seeing coverage of the Tour, although not much, until Floyd Landis and Oscar Pereiro began battling for the Jersey in the past week. SportsCenter seems to be working with a cycling specialist whom I don't remember seeing last year. They did make sure we didn't miss any of the spectacular crashes. They did make mention of George Hincapie taking the Yellow Jersey from Thor Hustav and when he lost it.

On the radio, I can tell that sports radio guys are trying to cover the Tour more. Many of them aren't really too familiar with cycling at the beginning of the tour but now show signs they have become more knowlegeable.

Overall, the Tour has gotten more covereage on ESPN Sportscenter in the past three weeks than I can remember coverage of the Arena Football league

Another article by the same guy, Jim Caple, titled "Ride your bike, save gas." My favourite part:

"The best part about Floyd Landis winning the Tour de France is that now cyclists won't have to listen to SUV drivers shouting, "Get off the @#%&ing road, Lance," while they give us the finger. Now, we'll get to hear them yell, "Get off the @#%&ing road, Floyd," while they give us the finger."
