nyc - be careful on b'way.
hi folks. i took quite a tumble a few hours ago and i'm happy to be unhurt. on the southbound side of broadway, there is a several-block long oil slick. i hit it at (i think) 68th street and immediately went down, sliding on my hip into a car. i was relieved to find the car i hit stopped at a traffic light. another biker and a few peds checked if i was okay--i was, just shaken. but i was covered in this thick oily ****. couldn't even walk on it. plus i had to scrub it out of the big ol' scratch on my arm, and that was uncomfortable. and i smelled bad. but anyway, be careful. i realy don't think there's any way to keep your wheels underneath you if you hit it.
things i'm grateful for: helmet (didn't hit my head, but i like it anyway), friendly peds, opportune red lights, not getting very hurt or dead, nice days to bike even if one falls...

Oil is the worst. A buddy of mine was riding studded tires on the ice one winter and totally lost it one day on some oily road. Bombing ice, no problem, it was the oil that knocked him on his ass.

Sounds like when i went down in a "Snapple Slick" at union square last year in the middle of work. Sticky, Bloody mess all sponsored by NYC. Apparently they didn't think a mack truck sized popsicle would melt in 90 degree heat.

Yep, glad you're okay there, i too my oil incident toady as well, while slowing for a light on west twenty something, my tire suddenly lost grip on the tarmac, and locked up the wheel, but still didn't slow me down enough for the light up ahead the happened to have been light in the color of "stop". Luckily, north-bound traffic was sincere enough to wait for my slidding self to clear the intersection before they carried on.
Anyways, glad i had my helmet too, ya know just in case

In the winter its bad here too....heating oil trucks always leave puddles
that are instant go-downs too...

Well once was not enough for me, and i ran into some oily residue crap, yet again. It felt like oil, and was mixed with some garbage/waste disposal, for thats what it smelt like. I hit the patch, my tires went right, left, right, and then just gave up and ditched me off the bike throwing me off into the ground. My back hit the ground first, and by jansport bag is really quite shredded up, and i then rolloed over and slammed my chin. I now have this nasty gaping hole in my chin after the pavement ripped off a few layers, and im sure my teeth are in bad shape, but since i can't stand the disapointment tonight, i'll save the inspection for tommorow. THis is not how i was expecting to end my commute, considering i was only 4 blocks from home on my 12 mile commute.

the garbage truck slicks are the worst. i've hit the pavement twice, both on bedford ave in williamsburg, because of gross, oily slick trails from garbage trucks.
nothing like having your open wounds filled up greasy garbage truck runoff.
