Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Welcome to Hell! Well, not really. It's hot now but the Winters here RULE. Just get up early for longer rides. Not too many fixed riders outside of Tempe here but ALOT of rodies and MTB. Tempe is very bike friendly, as is most of Pheonix/Scottsdale. It's not as flat as people think. There are mountains all throughout the city. Are you going to ASU? Well, welcome to the valley and maybe I'll see you on the road. I ride an IRO or a Look.

I saw a brown something locked at the natural food co-op yesterday on University. I just moved into my apartment yesterday but I am heading back to DC on tuesday, then I'm heading back down here "for good" on the 26th. I have to wait until then to ride here and I'm dying!!!! right now is the only time I have REALLY wanted to go back to work. I can't wait though!!

So my girlfriend is moving to the Phoenix area (Cave Creek) at the end of the month and is wondering where she might find a down to earth LBS. She's relatively new to the sport, although she is eager to learn more. Important aspects are women-only or medium paced rides, sweet mechanics and sales personel that avoid alienation of customers, etc. From the looks of it, the only Arizona shop I'd feel comfortable sending her to based on internet presence is Absolute Bikes (located in Flagstaff). Any suggestions?

Local Bike Shop / Tempe

Go to Domenics (on mill ave about a 1/4 mile east of university) theyre track/fixed friendly and well just friendly in general they also dont try to pressure into anything you dont need and have a decent assortment of track components also i dont know if they still do so or not but they used to have a fixed "group ride" on sundays etc...ask to speak with joel hes very knowledgable

I guess I should've prefaced it by saying that I wasn't looking for exclusively FG/SS-friendly shops. She has asked me about fixed gears, but I don't think she's ready for that and especially doubt she'll get into it on her own. Mostly, she just needs a place with welcoming group rides and that has wrenches who aren't total asshats.

In Cave Creek: Spokesman on Cave Creek Rd. or Landis on Scottsdale & Shea (in Scottsdale). Domenics is cool as well as is Tempe Bikes.
