Skips

Hello,
I just purchased a new womens specialized sirrus sport hybrid (with road-like tires). I do not live close to the place where I purchased it and before I take it to a shop...wondering if I could easily fix this myself.
The chain skips and starts to come off when I change gears (comes off from the front end). One point it totally came off....any help is much appreciated...

Adjust the limit screws on the front derailleur. Check out Park Tool website for more details.

Since it's a new bike I suspect that the shift cables have stretched or loosened. You may need to add some tension to the shift cable(s) and check to see that the screws that hold the cables to the derailleurs are tight. Add tension with the barrel adjustors at the derailleurs by turning counter-clockwise, 1/2 turn at a time. The Park Tool website should help with cable adjustments too.
