What's a good speed for a 15k TT?

For a Under-17 rider on a pretty much flat out-&-back? My cousin wants to participate in one, but he doesn't want to get smoked. 25 minutes?

25 min - 24 mph average. Does your nephew see that average much? Flat is good but wind will be issue. He will need aerobars and some decent legs. Try and get a split under 12-1/2 minutes and adjust accordingly.

I doubt 35kph would be either last or first, and I suspect that it would be in the top half of average speeds. Certainly not an embarassing time for an event that accepts unqualified riders, and at that age, encouraging competition will certainly make his next attempt much more successful than only entering after he can beat the time of previous winners.

I'm looking at the results from the USAC development camp I went to this june. For 17-18's in a 40k TT the speeds ranged from 23-29mph. So the slower guys (like me) would have done a 15k in about 23-24 minutes. But these were all kids who had qualified with top 3's in LAJORS races and none were weak.

So yeh, aim to get it under 24 minutes. If not? who cares. Get your nephew out there are let him have fun.

I would suggest that you explain something to him that keeps me going: that the best pro roadies are usualy 29-31 and, in this sport, you are at a temporary disadvantage being 17 or 18. But if he starts training now, by the time he reaches his late 20's he will be quite strong.

How much aero gear will he be wearing or riding?

BTW, all the times/speeds I was talking about were done in stanard road gear. Who needs aerobars? ...oh right, Greg Lemond.

That said, in full aero gear on a tt bike, I did a 10 mile tt yesterday in 23:24 (25.64mph). On my "road bike" with no aero gear or positioning, I might be able to average 23 or something...but probably not?

FYI in that same race, all but one guy out of 22 averaged over 20mph.

Then tell him not to bother. If his ego can't take getting his rear handed to him on occasion this is no sport for him.

The reality of racing is someone always wins, and someone always finishes last.

40k TT
wow, not a big change from the winner in any cat. cat1/2 was slower than cat3 and 3 was slower than 4, strange. Congrats on you second place and top 10 overall.
