We'll welcome the bloke from Fiji, as long as he's not a sheep shagger.

This must be it!
Only signed up a week or so back and no sooner found the Oz thread.... it was Gooooone.
I'm an ol' fart just starting to cycle again, for the first time really, since getting a drivers licence back when an 8 track under the dash was cool, or hot, I don't remember.
I'm trying to get a bike and I set up for some touring. We'll both need lots of help methinks.
Having just bought a "budget" hybrid, Giant Elwood, could somebody point me to some old fashioned mudguards? We don't get a lot of rain in Mildura but there sure is a lot of dust, sand and other nondescript crud on the roads that delights in spraying all over everything, 'specially well lubed mechanicals.
Cheers. ozylynx

Welcome, mate. TAT is still around, just can't drag back the original bunch of bogans. SKS plastic fenders should run aboot AU$20 a pair. Some chrome ones with more coverage will be more expensive, and harder to fit. And don't knock the Elwood. I'm willing to bet it's quite comfortable.

Thanks Expat.
"Jetto" does seem comfy, untrained butt cheeks not withstanding. Actually if anybody can see a "problem area" in the stats on this bike, I'd appreciate the "heads-up" I've already identified that the rims will need an upgrade, sooner rather than later, due to sharpe ridges where they are joined and the pedals are kinda ordinary, but that's to be expected from a $300 bike eh! Other than that seems OK so far for a NOOB.
On the mud guard theme: I'm looking for the full coverage jobs. I just can't find any on the WWW. Most of what I can find are out of the question 'cause I'm running racks, trunk bag, panniers etc., so I can't use the seat post mount.
That should help keep the Mods happy, look bike talk!!!
BTW do any of the Sponsors on this forum do international orders? I've seen some offers to make me drool already but they seem Seppo exclusive.
Cheers. ozylynx

Lynxsy - if you ever felt the urge I think there's road & crit racing pretty much all year round up your way, since you have all that sunshine & stuff.

Oz, post over in touring, and see if anyone has suggestions for your bike. You need to find the ones that fit, and then find a supplier. I can forward gear to you, PM me about that. Most US retailers will ship to you, but you have to fax them (or email) a copy of your credit card and ID. Shipping/Customs may be a hassle that route.
About pedals, of course they're cheap. Look what you get on an expensive bike - no pedals. Why should they put a decent set on when most people will swap them out for something else. Really, why do bikes even come with grips and a seat? You should get to choose them at time of purchase.

Thanks again guys.
I wasn't complaining Expat. Merely an observation. I guess that handgrips, and pedals have to be supplied new to drongos like me who don't know what they want, yet.
Brings back memories of the only time I tried to ride with toe-clips, as a kid. I lived uo the road from the Haddow family, who were mad racers in the Newcastle area and Terry offered me a try out on his fixed wheel. No brakes of course and I didn't get settled properly as the bike took off down Black Butt Reserve, me with one leg in the air and the other firmly attached to the toe-clip, bucking up and down like a bull rider in a rodeo. We both, bike and I, eventually made a soft landing in the bushes much to the pleasure of all present. That might explain why I stuck to long distance running and left the others to the long distance cycling. Besides I never did have the legs for acceleration and sprints, I'm more the just keep on going forever type, or I was 35 years ago.
Existence, you're right about the red dust, but as I grew up in Newcastle i've seen my share of hills when riding for a while at least. Charlestown was a mongrel of a place to live if you rode a bike because no matter where you went for the day it was always uphill going home when you were tired. Bayview St., Warners Bay was always the local kids nemesis(The Sturmey Archer hub gears had a habit of slipping into neutral at the worst possible moment) Wolfe and Brown Streets in the City were to be seen but never attempted!
Cheers. ozylynx.

Moved in and out of Newcastle a few times, chasing career etc., It always pulled me back!
Finally broke away proper-like in '97. Lived on the Gold Coast 'till 2001, then threw some campimg gear in a car and toured the Eastern States 'till 2004 when I arrived in Mildura.
Now I'm getting prep'd for all points West, this time by bike!! (not so many hills)
I'm 52 at last count. Who's counting?
Cheers ozylynx.

My missus seems to know everyone in Newcastle, but she's a bit younger than you.
