The county store in LaGrange is a favorite stopping point when I'm out on my motorcycle, and the place where I decided I should resuming bicycling again. Great food and drink served by nice folks, I wish there was somewhere like that closer to me (I live in Arlington Heights, a little west of Chicago) that I could pedal to.

Hi, Midgie,

My wife and I have been riding in your area this year. We loved both the I&M and hennepin canal trails. In fact, we rode a short section between them today

I was just reading that. You show off
The weather has been amazing, till yesterday
The I & M canal is great riding. I've only taken it from Lasalle to Buffalo Rock and back
I live about a mile up the hill from where the canal ends in LaSalle.
I've never ridden the Hennepin Canal.

Starved Rock Cycling Association does a Pumpkin Pie Ride the 1st sunday in October
You can do the I&M from Ottawa to Lasalle and back. With Pumpkin Pie at the end of the ride
They also have goodies at the stop in Utica (and I think in LaSalle too)before you head back to Ottawa

Sounds like a fun ride. Thanks for the link. Maybe we can ride along on one of their events next year.

I guess I need to check in more often, huh? lol

Yes, Hideaway Hill is the one just west of the nature center, around the corner from Al Capone's Steakhouse. That nasty hill is hard to WALK up, let alone ride. I live in one of the houses just after the crest of the hill.

Still building the bike. It's taking a bit longer than I had expected, but with monosyllabic temps outside, I'm in no hurry to rush it. Wheels are in, component group in a few weeks. I can hardly contain myself. I'm looking forward to seeing some of you out on the Fox River path in the spring.

I love that hill, its the best part of my commute into St. Charles from Elgin, Oh wait, I mean the coming down part of course. Thats a steep hill, but a good workout for sure.

I think you might be thinking of the long, drawn out killer up Weber Drive, and then down the hill towards the bridge over the river. If you want to take a little detour on your next ride, at the grammar school at the top of the long hill (Villa Maria Road), head west, and then a quick north up Park Avenue at the next corner around the bend. Enjoy the ride down because coming back up the Hideaway Hill is absolutely violent. Its not very long, but it's essentially a vertical wall.

The only other climb I can ever recall remotely similar is Snake Alley in Burlington, Iowa, and that is brick/cobble that twists. This one goes straight up. It's kind of entertaining on Tuesday nights in the summer to watch the ride groups crest the hill—all riders in different conditions and all with miserable looks on their faces.

I'm itching at finally getting out there on a road bike... it's not so much fun on a mountian bike.

I don't know. I drove up the west shore of Green Bay this summer. The first town we went through in the UP had hookers standing outside the bars when there weren't any on the WI side.

The UP is truly amuzing. Wisconsin thinks it should be theirs, while the yoopers themselves (excluding Taerom who is only visiting) think they are Canadian.

Another from St Charles, IL here. I ride the local bike paths north, south, east or west depending upon my mood / weather plus my regular, fifteen mile road loop east through Wayne, IL. Usually ride alone but, looking to join some club rides in the spring with a goal to do my first century by next June.
