Who makes Columbia bikes?
Who makes Columbia bikes? Any opinions on the quality of them? Thanks.

Albert Pope who would become a bicycle tycoon, started Columbia in 1874, his bicycle and other factories grew until his plant was the largest of any manufacturer in America. Columbia's popularity was based on a reputation for very high quality.
For the next century the company had its ups and downs, was bought out, etc., its business model varied over the decades, sometimes it concentrated on making lots of mediocre bikes, at other times it the product was mostly first rate. Columbia disappeared in the 1980's like lots of other famous American and British brands due to Asian competition. Schwinn reappeared, perhaps Columbia has too?

My first real bike (with gears & hand brakes) was a Columbia. It was kind of a junky, Wal-Mart thing, with plastic shift levers and chainrings that wore out after a few thousand miles. The frame even broke in two on a hard bump, and was replaced by the mfr. But it got me through jr. high and high school.

The size chart for the bicycles is even more interesting. I never needed a chest size to fit a bicycle before.

I have come into posession of this Columbia 10 spd. Tandem recently, I havn't had
time to work on it much. It appears about 80% complete, the former owner was trying
to make it into a recumbant (seat hoseclamped on)...
When I get time I think I'll rebuild it, I will probably have to fabricate a seat/handelbar
thing for it and new chains etc. but thats no big deal.
It also has an internal disk brake of some kind on the rear and nice chrome fenders..
I'm guessing this thing was built in the early 70's.
I kind of wonder what this thing may be worth ??
