Red Bull Road Rage 2006

Just picked up the Nov/Dec issue of Road Magazine, where I noticed a short blurb about the Red Bull Road Rage downhill race. Has anyone here attended this event? Is it worth going to? If so, where is the best place to watch?

I don't think it is open to the public, unless you hiked up on a mountain
to watch it.

I'm floored that Freddy Rodriguez and Paolo Salvodelli are doing this. Shocked that their teams would allow it. One flat at the wrong time, and you're Superman-ing off a cliff. Granted, you could do that at the TdF, but...hey, this is Red Bull. Maybe they'll grow little wings?

I wonder how the bent would do. Pretty easy to smoke roadies going downhill on it. Show up with one of these.

If you read the website, it states that they are invited. I know Paolo has been invited for the last couple of years, to date he hasn't showed up.

Actually, I think they're yanking our chain. The site says those guys have been "invited" to race. There's a section where confirmed rideres are listed and neither of those guys are confirmed yet. I could be wrong, but I also doubt that those guys would do it. Salvodelli seems kind of a random invite. I would think they would have invited Floyd Landis since he's from socal and is supposed to be an awesome descender...plus I think he has some free time on his hands.

Can't sport motorcycles go pretty fast downhill too?

Well, that's just the stupidest thing ever...the inviting and advertising their names in bold.

"Hey everybody, I just invited Metallica to my birthday party!"
"Metallica's playing your birthday party?!!!"
"I invited them, so...maybe!"
"You're an idiot."

in a straight line yes, but you probably haven't been down Tuna Canyon. the turns are very tight first and second gear stuff on a sportbike. i thing the best choice would be something like a 125 gp bike w/o a motor or better yet one of the 50cc gp motorcycle from the '80s before they discontinued the class. corner speed is what you need to win like motorcycle racing

we tried to hike into last year's event. Tuna canyon is pretty knarly, and its nearly impossible to get to a proper viewing spot.

I met a roadie last weekend who got in, but was only able to watch the finish line.

I believe Floyd is having or had his surgery this week....I doubt he'd be in any shape to try it...maybe next year

How about a 125 cc TonyKart for snits and giggles.

karts would kill all, they're WAY faster than motorcycles and lots of race cars. the yellow bike (a downhill bike?) looks good but i think you need to pedal and i'd like to see some actual motorcycle tires for maximum grip

Its a gravity bike. I race with those guys when we do downhill inline races. The gravity bikes usually have fastest time of the day, although I got FTD at Bonelli park back in January.

no pedals, all gravity. They get a pretty good kick at the start though. They pump their tires to 150+ psi. They're sticky slicks, and they dial in the suspension between runs. Gravity bikes are bullets on the straights, and they stop quickly too.
