ok, all other things being equal, what'd be stronger: a rear SS/FG wheel with a 130mm hub, or the same built up with a 135mm hub? i'm thinking of building a cross check with a flip/flop, and the things are spaced 132.5. which hub will be stronger in the long run?

the strength difference would only come into play if you knew the distance between flanges. It's going to be negligible, but a wider base of a triangle leads to a stronger shape.

Assuming the flanges and bearings are the same on both, the shorter axle would be stronger.

ah-ha. 2 different opinions here, then. let's make it easier. velocity aeroheads, wheelsmith 14/15 butted spokes (of appropriate length for each application), surly new hubs, fixed/free, in either 130 or 135mm versions. what's stronger?

except axle failure is rare. How well the rim stays true is a better measure and the 135(assuming the flanges are set wider) will put up with more abuse and stay true.

It looks like surly makes a 135 and a 120 version. If the 130 is a spaced out 120 it would be weaker if it is a spaced down 135 there would be no meaningful difference.

(38.4 ctf on the 135 and 30.1 on the 120)

i think surly stopped making the 130mm fix/free version, based on what i see on their website. actually, i think they stopped making all the 130mm versions, but they used to make them, and i can still get them thru the shop/qbp. i'm leaning towards the 135mm version either way right now, tho, as i think it might be more versatile for application in future projects, feel me?
