Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I think I have watched the slow death of a good thing myself.

...but I predict the freezing temps will lure a lot of people back to the forum, and the combination of cabin fever and alcoholic beverages will start a flurry of bike building and thread posting.

Or the scene will simply die suddenly; in truth hibernating until the next great trend mating season.

Juvi-kyle, you should refer to this as the Pinkbike of fixed gear and singlespeeds!

Ok...now everyone go do something about this. Start talking about riding bikes and building them. And dont bore the rest of us with the garbage that has been here as of late. I still love this place so much and I dont want to see it die.

If you are looking for a good bike ride, check the rides subforum. Where the DC thread has slowly died an awful death.

Right now I'm building up a single speed for my girlfriend's birthday. I'll be posting photos as soon as I get the rest of the components and the build process is started. I wish there was something else I could do other than quote Master P or something...

I still like the place. I have for over 2 years now. Some leave some come. Whatever. It's always fun.

Edit: Just to add. I'm not hating on the new members at all. I just mean this board goes through a Pheonix like cycle. It grows into a gold-mine of information and becomes highly popular. Soon after it burns itself to the ground and builds back up. This includes gaining new SS/FG'ers and losing old ones. Those of us that stay just see the curve, ride it out, and we have on more place to post everyday.

Not to beat the horse anymore, but I read the forum to learn for 6 months before joining and recently noticed this decline of fresh information and consistent repetition. Who knows, maybe what we all need is an alleycat to boost our self esteems; I'm sure as hell looking forward to one on friday

What I think juvi-klye is bemoaning is the day when, it was an actual inspiration to log on here, see what others were doing, and go out and ride your bike.

It was a very inclusive little environment where you would feel a sort of movement going on. Now it's just sort of...I don't know how to explain it...

It just hasn't been inspiring. But I spend a lot of time on the other forum areas, so I still think this(www.Bikeforums.net) is one of the best places to be on the web for an enthusiast. SS/FG just needs a shot of adreneline. Apply directly to the forehead.

i think the problem is obvious.. everyone left for their local forum thats been set up...which makes sense.. i always thought talking to strangers was a bit creepy

for example.. sf fixed is where half the fun went, good and bad

juvi's just bitter 'cause la fixed sucks

Especially when they arew local and can follow you home....WTF? Everyone is a stranger until the moment you meet them. We all unite through bikes, we are more common and alike. The locals are stll lurking, they know the intl. scene is where it's at.

Alot of people went to another fixed forum because they got tired of threads being moved...
Is fixed gear scene to punk rock for bikeforums? I say yes. keep it on topic kids....
mod...shouldn't this thread be moved to Forum Suggestions and User Assistance?

i dont unite through bikes, and dont feel more common and alike to bike riders..actually many times its just the opposite

but i do love a good forum fight.. maybe there hasnt been enough drama in these parts

i'm gonna repeat what a couple other people have already said: these forums (all of the ones on bikeforums) seem to be cyclical...they are good, then *****ty, then good, then *****ty, and you just gotta ride it out.

personally, i love reading the stuff in ss/fg much better than the roadie stuff a lot of the time, even though my "best" bike is geared (and therefore apparently hated by a few around these parts). this is the forum i go to when i don't want to listen to the stupid crap in the road forum. my personality probably belongs more here anyways. usually i just lurk around here and avoid posting...i'm not sure why that is...whatever.

either way, back to bikes: i've seen more bikes on these forums that are WAY more original than any bikes i've seen anywhere else, and the passion here is as good as or better than any of the other forums.

i'm not sure what point i'm trying to make(if i'm trying to make a point at all). just rambling aimlessly, i suppose.

Cheers!!

You might have hit the nail on the head.

Yo, it's not like this is Gizmodo. The SS/FG world is pretty small and pretty slow moving.

It's sort of like going to the same bar for 2 years and seeing the same wh*re running her same tricks over and over and...wait. This isn't about me....

I guess I'm trying to say, sometimes you won't notice change if you are watching daily for it. Sometimes you gotta leave and come back after a while.

i noticed this too. it kind of sucks, cause i don't think any of the people in basel
will be starting a local forum anytime soon. besides i'm always playing catch up
as it is, because all the action takes place when i'm asleep. but lately i've been
browsing through the topics like, "...meh."

There are the local forums, there is the fact that new users get repelled by "use the search function," and there is the fact that people who are bored at work feel the urge to say stupid **** (I'm guilty of that sometimes). I think that if we all lower our expectation for bikeforums to always be a source of amazing, compelling and interesting content, we'll change our behavior and make it better.
