hi. i am considering buying a used cdale xs800 that has a set of hed 60s on it. hed doesnt list them on their website, but from what i understand there is a european distributor that makes cx-specific wheels? does anyone have details on these? they have cannondale branding on them (see photo). im guessing they would be sturdy enough for racing on, but what about loaded tours? bad idea?

A little stiff for touring, but that is a very nice bike with a very nice wheelset.

so your saying you think theyd be strong enough, just not ideal comfort-wise?.. im thinking of doing some loaded trail rides, something around 40lbs-50lbs in panniers.

I wouldn't use them for touring or cyclocross. I know some people like deep aero rims for cross because suposedly they shed mud well but they are also very heavy. I like shallow box section rims for cross. For touring I use a 40 hole rear hub and a 36 hole fron laced to a pretty strong Mavic boxed rim. Aero is not necessary for touring and generally you want a wheel that is easy to repair and to get spare parts for.

"very heavy"?? are you joking? these are not like cxps or something. we are talking carbon with titanium spokes. easily under 2kg for the whole wheelset! thats about 1,5kg lighter than anything you could put together with a box rim.

I'd still suggest getting wheels that are easier to repair on the fly for touring though. Something that you can crawl into some backwoods mom and pop bike shop and they will have parts for.
