Pick one at at B&N somewhere for like 8 bucks, it'll get you just about anywhere in Manhattan and at least TO the williamsburg bridge... You're on your own after that....

In addition to what DannyRocks said:
if you wanna get a really good map resource of this city, get the geographia or hagstrom mini-atlas of NYC.
it comes as a small spiral bound book and it has just about every street you'll need to reference for any sort of ride here. it's worth it. you won't get lost again
