changing rear cassette

Hi, I am looking to modify my mtb from a 18sp to a 24sp...do i need to measure between the rear brackets to be sure an 8sp cassette will fit?

Bikes: '96 Litespeed Catalyst, '05 Litespeed Firenze, '06 Litespeed Tuscany, '20 Surly Midnight Special, All are 3x10. It is hilly around here!

It's more than the dropout spacing. The freehub body for an 8-speed cassette is different (wider) than that that for a 7-speed cassette.
