The IRO group buy sounds like a great deal; almost one of those situations where I can't afford not to get one. Problem is, finishing the build will cost considerably more than the frame; I'm on a tight budget and looking for ways to build the bike cheaply enough to justify buying a frame.

My bright idea was to buy a Windsor 'The Hour' and strip the parts, then sell the frame on eBay. I can't figure out a better way of getting a complete bike's worth of parts, even if the stuff on The Hour is of middling quality. What do you think?

Buy a green Kilo TT instead...something between 58-60cm, and I'll bid on the frame.

i've got a windsor "the hour," i've had it for about 10 months. you could probably get anywhere from $50-100 for the frame... but then, maybe more if you find a good sucker- i mean buyer.
the wheels are machine built and will require a tuneup after a few months, the front wheel has cartridge bearings, the rear has normal "sealed" bearings. you'll need a new cog and lockring. the stem faceplate bolts stripped out after about a dozen times being bolted and unbolted, the threads just pulled right out. the headset is weak, and the bb isn't too far behind. the seatpost and saddle, they're ok. the bars i ditched for bullhorns. the cranks are ok.

Yeah I figured that; I've built a couple wheels, so truing or even rebuilding them isn't too scary for me.

why do you say that?

ok, this may be a stupid question: when buying a 'frame and fork' (such as the IRO deal), does that typically include the fork INSTALLED in the frame (ie headset included) or just loose (ie source your own headset)?

which comes to $370 total vs. $150 frame + $350 windsor - however much the frame sells for (between $75 and $100, I'd guess)

either way it'd probably be pretty close

Those look like they might be a decent deal for $100, hand built and all, though I know little about vuelta. I like how they meticuously list ALL the specs of the build... except the weight, heh heh.
There's an eBay seller in Austin w/ Windsors for $239 that I emailed this afternoon to ask about local pickup. At the moment it seems, for $240 minus the money recouped from the frame sale, that may be hard to beat.

By the way, you DO realize the the Windsor is the exact frame as the Fuji Track right? If you list the frame on craigslist and mention that it's essentially a Fuji Track, it may fetch you a little more $$$, since the Fuji Track does seem to be more popular.

Nobody here will agree, but the IRO frame will not be such a super-duper turbo upgrade from the windsor/fuji frame that futzing with swapping the parts over would really be worth it. Those frames are actually better than most of the parts going on them, especially the wheels. I would just get some wheels from one of the known cheap vendors and prowl ebay and CL for the next couple of months looking for the other bits. Otherwise, just buy an IRO build kit, they're a pretty good value.

The *frame* is what's worth keeping on the Windsor, the parts are decidedly meh

on that note you can beg for parts here, if you pay for shipping i have a nitto technomic stem in 110mm that you could have(that's if you're going to threaded, which i think the hour is so you must be)
