As reported on BentRider Online, recumbent bikes dominated DFs at the recent 2007 running of the 24 Hours of Sebring.

Quoting BROL:

"Leading the pack was Dennis Grelk in the Barracuda Streamliner with 522 miles completed in 24 hours. All of the major unfaired categories were won by Bacchetta Riders. John Schlitter had the fastest 24 hour run at 479.5 miles. James Kern led the 12 hour riders with 251.5 miles and Sarah Kay Carrel rode her Aero 367.6 miles to capture the women's 24 hour title."

In 2006 the top finishers in the 24 hour non-drafting event were:
516.5 miles - James Kern - recumbent
483.2 miles - Timothy Woudenberg - recumbent
474.9 miles - Doyce Johnson - recumbent
470.3 miles - Rick Rheingans - DF/upright

522miles in 24hrs by a streamliner. Piss-poor tbh. Get those professionals down here and I know of at least 3 teams that would do that distance on a bad day.....including the team I'm part of.

Me being the casual rider would not even think of riding for 24 hours in one stretch so the numbers sound good to me... I could ride the 24 but my mileage would not be near these guys....and gals. I just like the idea that bents are making a name as a real bike after being "thrown out" of the biking world. who wooda thought....

I would love to see you say that to Dennis on the track. He would destroy you. He broke several records this past year alone. I call BS on this post.

Incidentally, I'm forming a 4-man team for the texas time trials this year. Should be fun.

I don't dought he'd destroy me. I only ride 350km per week- that's all that's required for the 24hrs we do. Due to issues with fluids (one drink bottle to save weight), its only viable to stay out on the circuit for 90minutes to 2hours at a time. I know no-one in the teams I'm talking of in my 1st post would do anymore then that.
What i was picking on was the vehicles speed. Teams of trikes do the same distance in 24hrs- if not over 600miles if you're lucky. Sure, we arn't doing it solo like dennis, but it isn't like we are riding in a straight line on an empty road like dennis. I think it's an achievement that we can match those distances, sharing the track with 215 other vehicles spread over a technical 3mile circuit, not to mention 20 minutes of pitstops and the odd crash in the mix.
I'd like to see a person like dennis in a couple of vehicles down here. I reckon he'd break 522miles in 24hours.

Sounds interesting. What are you riding? Confused though. Why do you need 4 people for a time trial? Are they all riders or pitcrew?

It'll be relay style, and we're just in the planning stages of it. It's a 24 hr race, but there are solo efforts and team efforts. None of us wants to go solo, so 4 of us on the track 6 hours each is the idea. I'll never be a real ultradistance competitor - I'm not built for it. But these sorts of things will sure give you fun training for them!
