California Police use Bikes to Fight Gangs
Wasn't exactly sure where to deposit this one, but it seems like an advocacy type article. Pretty neat to see the sport used in this "alternative" way. Football, basketball and baseball are not for everyone.

"What we've found, especially with these kids that have turned to gangs, that have turned to drugs or this violent lifestyle, is that at some point in their lives they were missing a positive role model," Young said.
Middle School student Anthony Short said it's the first sport he's ever signed up for.
"It means a lot to me because at least I have something to do after school. It will keep me a little out of trouble," he said.
The program is also available at Luther Burbank High School.
The students practice three times a week, and will compete on a regular basis.

What is the cycling sport? What is the 'practice'? Is this trail riding? Races on courses?

Sounds like a good program. I never liked team sports. I prefered more adventurous things, and bicycling definitely qualifies as adventure. Mobility is freedom and if they are riding out in nature, or sort of nature, that's a welcome respite from concrete I'm sure.

Sounds great to me. PAL (Police Athletic Leagues) is popular here and said to be effective in diverting kids from crime and drugs. A positive approach usually works better than a negative one. A lot of cops have great people skills and make good coaches.
