building a bike?

so im thinkin about it, maybe next year. what im thinking about is a commuter with internally geared hub, front hub would i like a generator, disk brakes, drop bars, ridgid fork and mountain bike frame, 26 or 29er not sure yet.
i really enjoy commuting and just riding around town. i have never built a bike before and am new to cycling, and all the terminoligy and jargon that goes with it, but i believe i have a good mechanical ability.
i dont know if there is really a ? i need to ask yet other than should i do this or leave it up to my LBS. maybe buy a complete and change it fit my needs? i know there is a lot involved and i need to research this and i will learn as i go.

im looking to spend somewhere in the area of $2000 to $3000 or so.

any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated.
rob

Personally, I'd pass on the disk brake (unless you have long, steep hills). That may simplify a dynamo hub??

Maybe, maybe not. It would depend on the particular equipment that you choose and how much of the work you can do yourself. If you were to build the bike around a Rohloff Speedhub Disc with higher end hydraulic brakes, for example, I'd think that you could burn through $3,000 pretty fast.

i dont have many hills around but i do commute in the rain a bit and have had a few "episodes" . nothing too scary just didnt stop to my liking. if it comes down to choosing between dick brakes and and the dynamo hub ill choose the disk brakes
