PBP Medical Certificate
According to the PBP rules ...
"Riders must supply a medical certificate less than three months old, attesting that they are physically capable of covering 1200 km without any risk to their health."
And also ...
"Individual entries will be accepted from 11 June to 14 July 2007.
- either via the Internet at https://www.paris-brest-paris.org, which will describe how you can track your entry in real time.
In return riders will receive immediately via email an entry number and confirmation of receipt of entry, then the list of documents that must be sent by mail.
- or by mail by sending a signed entry form accompanied by the required documents.
The entry must be accompanied by :
1°) a medical certificate less than three months old
2°) Proof of insurance
French : recto-verso photocopy of the licence.
Non-French : photocopy of insurance certificate.
3°) a recent identity photo which must be trimmed to the size 35 x 25 mm.
4°) 3 self-adhesive labels 80 x 40 mm containing the participant’s name and address.
5°) a cheque or confirmation of transfer in euros for the amount for registration and other requirements. The price of the various options is given on the entry form."

So ... do you have your medical certificate ready to go? Have you lined up an appointment for a complete physical with the physician of your choice yet? If you live in an area like me ... you're already too late for that. My Dr is booking complete physicals in August right now. So ... I'm going to have to figure out a "Plan B" very soon.
Just thought I'd toss out this "head's up" to those going to the PBP!!

So ... how are you doing collecting all the required stuff for the PBP???
I've got my insurance, but that's it so far.
I'll get my photo and labels and all that shortly.
But I'm having a bit of difficulty with the medical certificate. I went to my regular Dr today with a letter for her to sign, figuring she'd sign it and I'd be on my way ............ but trust her to suddenly remember my heart problems!!! Now I've got to go for heart testing. BAH!! Well, fingers crossed nothing new shows up.

Sorry this personal question, but what kind of heart problems you have had?
I also have had some problems with my heart. I have premature heart beats (extrasystolia) for time to time. They are checked and everyting should be allright. They are very common in athlets. It´s a irritating but not a dangerous problem.
Here is some research fot the subject. https://www.aafp.org/afp/20030101/tips/4.html
I do not have my medical certificate yet. Let´s see what my doctor says.

Today I got my photos and filled out the application. I already have the copy of my medical insurance card, and I have the labels. Next week my doctor should be mailing me the "statement of health". The only sticking point is the certification number for my 400k. Since it was the first 400k for our new RBA, RUSA is checking things over just to make sure. Until then I don't have the number.

More silly questions from a PBP first-timer: What does the "medical certificate" need to say? Can it be jotted on a prescription pad? Is letterhead necessary? Someone have the magic words handy that worked for them in 2003?
I can see a lot of docs in the U.S. -- with our litigious society -- being pretty hesitant on digning off on these things. Anyone run into that problem in the States?

Letterhead yes, standard words are along the lines of "I know of no reason why XXX should not take part in the Paris-Brest-Paris bike ride."

From the RUSA PBP FAQ:
the common joke, of course, is that you only have to be physically fit. Mental fitness and sanity is irrelevant.
according to most of the folks on Randon getting a doctor to sign off on your document was a pretty trivial exercise.

This note can be one sentence on a prescription-pad piece of paper that simply says "I have examined this patient and found him/her to be physically fit (to ride 1200k)." It has to have your name on it, be signed by the doctor and dated within 3 months of the PBP registration period.

Some Drs tell me that exercise is good for me (expecially that specialist) ... others tell me I should lead a sedentary life.

The above noted has been my patient since ____. I certify that she is
physically fit to participate in the 1200 km Paris-Brest-Paris Randonnée of
August 20 to 24, 2007.

My medical form is signed!!
I am the picture of health ... well, except for my heart (yes, something showed up on the ECG - I knew it would), my left shoulder, and a touch of arthritis in my right foot.
Now I've got to gather everything else by the end of the week.

Turns out that my doc is out of the office, so I saw one of his partners, who did all of his schooling in France. So I've got my signed letter, and it's en francais. How cool is that?
