Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

When I can't get to sleep at night...

I often start thinking about what the 'coolest' FG would be. The one that both young whipersnappers and purists would drool over, the one that would win awards for beauty, but still have a certain understated cool. One you could turn up to a velodrome with, and even the guys riding Corimas and BTs would crowd around to have a look.

I was thinking that for a frame you'd start with either a Pegoretti, Nagasawa or an old Benotto.

The headstem and bars would be perhaps the old steel Nitto combination, or the Cinelli steel badged stem with steel bars. Or, if alloy, a NJS Nitto combo or the classic Cinelli 1A with the old pista bars with the loopy, scrolly logo.

Cranks and bottom bracket would have to be Campagnolo Record from the early 80s, but with a drilled Super Record chainring.

The wheels - any suggestions? Cane rims laced to Harden hubs? Mavic OR7s laced to Campagnolo Record hubs? Or for a more road-going option, Mavic SSC Blue rims laced to Campagnolo Record "Sherrif Star" hubs. I haven't included clincher rims - is there a "classic" clincher rim? Mavic MA2 maybe? Laced with Hoshi blade spokes of course (yes, I know they're not the best).

Saddle - Brooks? Too obvious? A brand spanking Kashimax? Not sure.

Seatpost - I'd lean toward a Campagnolo Record again - but it wouldn't fit a Kashimax. Maybe a Nitto "Frog" post?

Pedals - Campagnolo Gran Sport (tough, but look good), Suntour Superbe maybe. With Alfredo Binda straps and Campagnolo Record steel clips.

Headset - go for modern Chris King, NJS Hatta, or Campagnolo Record - but the road model not track.

Chain - Wipperman.

If I was going to run a brake - Modolo Kronos (but they don't work), Campagnolo Delta, Campagnolo Cobolto or CLB.

What have I forgotten? Is this too old fashioned? I didn't list Aerospokes or carbon frames, I guess they're just not my idea of cycling cool.

Anyway, what's your build list? Anyone? (And don't even think of writing Specialized Langster with Formula hubs and Miche cranks).

i think it'd be cooler to ride any old piece of crap and smoke the guy riding that bike. then buy him a beer, and not get tied up in the fact that he has either made poor financial decisions or has waaaay more disposable income than i do.

but alas, i'm not that fast.

I'm riding an old piece of crap - but I can't stop dreaming about the day I win the lottery. And I'm not that fast either

True, but it's a museum piece - and those tyres last about one ride on a wooden track (I exagerate, but not by much). The same guy also has Lother Thom's ( https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lothar_Thoms ) Cinelli time trial bike - another amazing machine.

I like the Masi above.

carlton frame
badged cinelli stem with matching steel bars
mavic or10 to campy record
brooks
campy record seatpost
campy record pista pedals
campy gran sport headset (looks almost identical to the pista, though I have one of those too)
izumi chain

the return of the stan miles is gonna break a lot of rules... cant wait...
