1) Where can I order trekking bars? I searched the net quite a bit and didn't find a ready source of the the cheaper $25 version.

2) Based on advice from my previous question, I'm leaning toward touring with my hybrid (Specialized Crossroads 2002) rather than my road bike. Will a trekking bar fit my stem? Any problems mounting brakes or gear shifters? Can I do this myself? I have basic tool skills but don't know anything about things like cable length.

3) I would love to have a trekking bar on my road bike (Trek 1000) as well. Will I encounter mounting problems there?

Welcome to bikeforums.net; there's so much useful information here, and people are so very helpful.

If you look carefully, you will find a tab "Search The Forums" which will allow you to search for particular words, for instance "trekking bars", and a few minutes spent using the search function might provide all the answers you're looking for. Good luck, but be warned, it's addictive!

Good that you should ask. I just purchased Trekking bars a few weeks ago. Still playing with them. But they are great. Now, be careful which ones you buy. I bought the ones that REI sells for their novara bikes, about $20 I believe and they will do the job but I belive you should ck out the ones at Wallibike.com. I will include the link below...

I bought mine from https://wallbike.com They cost $ 21. Shipping was fast. I am now waiting for bar tape from another supplier ordered on the same day.

Put my brake/shifter on the same bar (MTB). Easy - only took an Allen wrench. However, I found that the trekking bars shortened the reach by about 1 1/2 inches. Simple cure - longer stem. Again, only tool - Allen wrench. Everything (brakes and shifting) took a little adjustment, but it was a good swap-out for me.

try also to setup the brake levers at the front with pauls thumbies and shimano bar end shifters (see sheldon brown's website for more of this...a more novel approach than having the levers on the bar closest to you).
