Think bouncy bouncy. Hop Hop. Super technical front wheel doesn't touch the ground.

So, it would make sense to have a really light bike right? Do they use bmx or mtb's?

haha now comes the tricky stuff.

BOTH!...Stock (mtb) and mod (bmx 20") trials. The frames are entirely different styles but some mtb styles do work as basic trials bikes. Here is a good overview from the start for trials. This should answer all questions.

It is more of a BMX bike w/a few tweeks but they do have trials on MTB also.
And just to add to what Mael said also think ballance, ballance and ... ballance.

Monty offers a beginner mod bike, several really, that offer the geometry of a higher end bike with less exspensive brakes and such, for under $500.
By simply beefing up your braking, getting rid of your big ring and installing a bash ring, you can turn your mountian bike into a decent stock bike. I ride my regular mountian bike set up mostly for trials just in case I see something I want to try and fall off of.
