Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Did a personal best TT with double disks

15k out and back, no wind, 20 degrees Celsius, on a standard road bike with aerobars and a set-forward seatpost.

I did it in 20:55, about 43 km/h, or 26.5 mph. My average heart rate for the effort was 178, or about 90%. My previous best 15k was a mere 22:01.

I used disc covers in the front and back made from thick, corrugated plastic election signs that were put on my lawn last fall. I attached them onto my wheels with zip ties- total cost ~ $10.

And yes, I AM masochistic. That front disc was a b!tch to handle. But now I LAUGH at people who spent thousands on their Zipp 999's. But that doesn't mean I don't want them... I think I'll get tired of rolling around with "Richard Majkot, Conservative Party" on my bike pretty quickly.

EDIT: pics!

I would definitely do it if I had the skill and talent to cut plastic and secure it to my wheels without it being an aerodynamic, not to mention safety and aesthetic, hazard. My wife is an artist and craftsperson but there's no way she would do such a nerdy project.

pretty simple really. Just get the inside diameter of your wheels (622mm minus 2x rim depth plus maybe 2-3mm), and then cut a circle out of the plastic with an exacto-knife. Cut out a hole in the middle for the hub, and then cut a straight line from the edge to the centre (along a radius), bend the plastic to the lenticular shape of the wheel, and then snip the extra material and then duct tape on the inside. Poke 5-6 pairs of holes with a knife in the cover, and then zip tie it to the spokes, making sure that you space your ties out evenly. Repeat for the other side. Cut out a small triangle at the edge for your inflation valve, and then just duct tape this into place when you're done pumping. Viola, disc wheels!

It sounds like you should go into business making disc wheel conversions.

OK, I'll put up a pic of my front wheel disc. Too lazy to take another pic of my rear.

I've also heard of people using winter window insulation. Someday, it will be a fun project for me

Not carbon, plastic. But I'm not spending $60+shipping for something I can make with materials around the house.

Sounds like a good boring summer day project.... for the rear. I weigh 125lbs.... I'd blow over if I had one upfront.

double post much??

that aside, cool idea, i'll be sure to snag one of the big one's next election season, but it's way to windy around here for a front disk.

Why didn't you just point the writing to the inside?
