It worked!
I set a goal for tonight's Tuesday Nighter to execute my first successful attack, and it worked! I've always just been a sprinter...
Tonight attacked on the last hill of the hilly section, on the last lap, ~6 miles from the finish. I coordinated with my training partner to meet me at the back of the pack on the last lap, before that hill. He showed up, I lit it up relatively easy for a sprinter, and we got away crisply. I held a reasonable pace up the hill, and we had 100m at the top.
After two or three minutes, a triathlete bridged up to us, and remarkably didn’t bring the pack with him. We worked together for a few pulls, and the pack got to within 20m, but this triathlete was FAST. Next thing I know, the pack is falling back fast. This guy has some serious horsepower.
Unfortunately, we dropped my training partner, but we had to put the last nail in the pack’s coffin. I took a strong pull up a hill, then had to sit in till the finish. This guy hauled us at 32-35 mph for 10 minutes. I tried to take a pull, but I couldn’t do better than 28, so I just sat in and suffered. My HR was 186 for the last 8 minutes – my LT is 178 (or so I thought), and my max (road measured) is 194. I was really suffering.
I told him I wouldn’t sprint against him, just out of respect for all the work he did, and we sailed in 40s ahead of the pack. It felt a little “wrong” to have a breakaway with a guy on a TT bike, but there were three other strong triathletes in the front of the chase on their TT rigs too.
Whatever. I got the break started at the perfect spot, with two road bikes, and that was a huge move for this lowly sprinter. This was in the Bs, so I guess I'm off to the As again to work on fitness and survival with the elite riders. I can finish with those guys, but it will be a while before I'm affecting the race...
Here’s where we took off (elevation of one lap: 9-miles, 150 ft top to bottom, first three hills into the 15mph headwind):

Don't sell your self short, you did great. If that guy was on a road bike, he'd be going 28-29mph, same as you.

Thats awesome man. Seriously you dont know how much a difference those TT bikes make until the same guy who is pullin on one jumps on a roadie and can't hang. I had a similar experience with a triathlete and couldnt figure out why I was suffering so much more. Kudos! Too bad you dont have a power file from that! I bet it was one hell of an effort! You had a little Jens in you today and thats never a bad thing!

That's awesome, nice work.
Sometimes in our training crits guys wil ride TT's, they can motor on those. They generally stay off the front for a while then one things really get going they pull off and do laps in the opposite direction.

Like smoothie said, don't sell yourself short. You took the initiative, made a smart move, the TT guy saw it and joined you. You couldn't have done it without him, he couldn't have done it without you.
I commend your decision not to sprint. Takes a noble, stand up guy not to sprint against him. I think a lot of guys would have. In the long run though, this guy is someone that will work with you in the future because you didn't screw him in the sprint.

Man, you did great! Those TT/Tri guys can motor on forever. I was having a friendly race against one on the Fridy group ride. I only beat him because I used his draft to slingshot me into a very strong headwind around a corner.

Thanks guys. Yeah, the speed differential with the TT bike is deep. I'm getting a crappy recovery back there, due to higher speed and less draft. When I pull, he gets a much beter draft plus lower speeds, so a much better recovery.
I haven't suffered like that in a while. It's good to build that character I guess. When I'm doing hill repeats, if I hit 182, I know I'm hitting the wall. I can't believe I held 186 that long -- though I'm sure cardiac drift had something to do with it -- I was just starting to get a little low on water.
Yep. No officials or registration. Some call it a "pirate race" (I usually dress like a pirate -- the hairy legs help). It's a really impressive training race. There was even a documentary made about it for the SXSW Film Festival. Trailer here:

It really was fun, and it's even more fun now that I'm starting to forget the pain. I just didmy lunch intervals with my initial breakaway partner, and he was telling me about the carnage in the pack after he rejoined. 10 more guys fell off the back during the chase

Lance has ridden it for years, and many pros have passed through. Pat McCarty has been a regular this Spring. This would be why I don't think I'm going to be doing too much in the As until I start doping or something

Nice ride. My hat is off to you for showing what a true sportsman is all about.
Because of you guys I am getting that racing itch I haven't had in 25 years...I even shelled out my dough to USCF just in case I want to scratch that itch.
