Cool new camcorder to take along
Besides being a Clydesdale, I'm also the technology columnst for the Detroit Free Press and get to test out all sorts of cool gadgets. I've been using a $149 little camera called the Flip (www.theflip.com) which is about the size of a fat cellphone. Anyway, I posted video from this morning's ride in Northern Michigan on my www.clydesdalefitness.com site. Come along.

The first part of your trip looked rough. You need a mountain bike to traverse the bike lane! Once you got off onto the path it looked very serene.

Cool video! And the comments about the "bike lane" are priceless. Maybe the city planners need to see that video.

Flip... I watched your post on the Free Press web...
site a few days ago. I believe you were near lake Michigan or Charlevoix... good piece. I read the Free Press everyday, although I do live in Virginia.

Not listed in the specs is the battery type / life / recharge-time.
theFlip is obviously intended for ease of use. The Oregon Scientific ATC-2000 would be my recommendation, since it is intended for sport use i.e. helmet and handle bar mounting. The ATC-2000 is more rugged and (appears) to have more options for video resolution and choice of 15 or 30 fps, with options of switchable memory cards up to 2GB in size, affording a low resolution 15 fps capacity of up to 794 minutes - way beyond the battery capability, but the batteries can be replaced as you go along, and for head mounting I would consider an external hip mounted battery pack, or an external battery pack for the bike. The ATC-1000 can only handle up to 1GB of memory and that gave 1 hour of recording at 15 fps.
Short review from October 2006 of the ATC-2000.
It would be really good to do a side-by-side comparison of these low-budget cams. Can the viewer of theFlip be turned off to extend battery life? Are the batteries proprietary or can I go to Radio Shack for replacements or even use off-the-shelf non rechargeables?
