Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cyclist gets head run over!

Check out the video on https://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18681802/

Somehow he flipped over the handle bars and landed in the street, then a truck runs over him and takes off. Good reason to wear a helmet in this situation. I may actually buy one now. But of course you could just say, learn how to properly use the front brakes and you don't need a helmet.

Not last week, but there were two yesterday.

To the OP--Wear a helmet, but not because of this. The helmet had nothing to do with him surviving.

yikes... must have scared the hell out of him.
can't believe the truck just did a hit and run, though...
accidents happen... but don't leave someone to die on the street.

Ever run over a styrofoam hamburger box in your car? Did you feel a bump?

It went national. Besides MSNBC it was picked up by other outlets like CNN, etc. I can say the folks down at Giro/Easton/Bell are totally tickled. I'm going to see if I can get an interview with Ryan. Any questions you guys would like to be asked?

Is Ryan the dude who got hit? If so, tell him to just ride Jenifer Street to Division and pick up the trail there - it's safer and prettier than riding through that intersection on the trail.

First question: How many fingers am I holding up?

Today was the first day it was on MSNBC.com. I check the site everyday so I figured it was new.

Basically, the human head would not survive a direct impact from a truck tire, nor is a helmet designed to protect the head from said impact. So, whether the guy was wearing a helmet or not, his head would've been crushed and he'd certainly be dead.

If you look at the pic of the helmet, the truck clearly ran over the back part of the helmet and the head was never really in the truck's path to begin with.

Sure, it probably lessened the concussion that he got when he hit the ground, but the statement that the helmet saved his life after his head was run over by a truck is just false.

The real issue here is the guy's horrific bike handling skills and apparent lack of ability to ride in traffic, but because it's good sensationalism it's becoming a "my head got run over by a truck but I wore a helmet so everything's OK" story instead.

It just perpetuates the idea some have that a helmet is the only safety measure you need, when really not riding like an idiot is a much more effective means of injury prevention.

I read an article someone from our local bike advocacy group sent out on their list serve. The guy sbasically says he was going "pretty fast" and saw the truck turning so he slammed on the brakes and went over the bars.

This IS NOT an example of why you should wear a helmet...this is a PERFECT example of why you should go fast on MUPs (he was on one and crossing a street), why you should never speed through an intersection like you own it (some jackass did this to me yesterday...didn't even look rode right off the curb, lucky for him I was on my bike and have good handling skills) and you should always have control of your machine.

My guess is that the wheel he was hit by (and I agree with Pete this wasn't a direct hit or he would be dead) was also unloaded...the rear inside wheel of a turning vehicle will unload in a turn transitioning the weight to the outside and the front of the vehicle.

Thanks for the explanation. I asked because I have seen a motorcycle helmet with a car tire track over the middle of the helmet and that guy survived with little injury. I know we are not talking about the same construction of helmet, but I was just curious.

You see these things very rarely, and as Grasschopper mentioned it's usually from a wheel that's unweighted due to swerving or something like that. Granted, motorcycle helmets are much sturdier, but it still takes some element of luck and favorable physics to survive that injury. I don't think even a motorcycle helmet would help you too much in a direct impact from a truck.
