Nishiki Custom Sport
I have a Nishiki Custom Sport with a Kawamura built frame, ID: KS270693. I would like to find out more about the bike. It seems to be different from all the other custom sport bikes I have found. Please let me know if you have any info. Thanks.

The Custom Sport was Nishiki's entry level model. The components are typical for the era and level and the frame is basic hi-tensile steel, resulting in a somewhat heavy (approx. 31 lbs), but sturdy and reliable bicycle. Based on the decals and serial number, yours is one of the very early models, circa 1973/1974. In 1973 they were spec'd with Shimano derailleurs, so yours is probably a 1974, unless they had shortages on the Shimano parts, which was not uncommon at the height of the bicycle boom. Original price was $99.00 US in 1973. The brand was quite highly regarded amongst the mass volume manufacturers. It was manufactured by a Japanese company named Kawamura and marketed in the USA by West Coast Cycle Supply

As usual, T-Mar has it right. I worked part-time at a Nishiki-Peugeot dealership from early 1972 through mid-1974, when the Custom Sport and Olympic always came with Shimano, so yours is probably a late 1974 or a 1975 model. I have yet to decode Kawamura's serial numbers, although I recall that my Semi-Pro, purchased in March 1971, was KS78091.
