Hey, I'm over the idea of reusing bearings since I maintain bikes often enough, and I'm wondering where is ya alls favorite place to get bearings. I'd prefer somewhere that will sell me a decent quantity of many different sizes (only ones relevant to bikes, obviously) so that I'm all set. On that note, what sizes do I even want? I do know that I want grade 25, though. I'm tired of buying bearings at LBSs, anyway, because there's probably over a thousand percent markup on them.

I am lucky in that I can get at used sealed bearing at my works, they are just thrown into a tub ready to be thrown away. I know which ones have 1/4 inch ball bearing inside of them, so I warp them in a rag... put them in a strong vice and crack open the cases. Then I help myself to the balls inside.

I have done this for years, with no issues. The hard part was knowing just what sealed bearing type had the correct size of ball bearings... but I have a good idea now. Of course, I use an old Multitoya guage to check. I have not paid for loose ball bearings for years.

Any industrial supply house will sell good (Grade 25) bearing balls in bags of 100 or more for very attractive prices.

Nice one. It's like stealing bikes to get the spokes. Bearing balls are practically free with a lot less effort and waste!
