using Ultegra 10 speed shifters on 9 speed bike

My Giant OCR 3 is 9 speed. Tiagra shifters, 105 FD and Ultegra 10 speed RD with FSA Gossamer triple. I have heard that I can use my new Ultegra 10 speed shifters on a 9 speed bike using a Shift Mate? Has anyone tried this and if so would you recommend it? My LBS said they never work out and I just should buy a chain and 10 sopeed cassette and change it over. Any thoughts on the **** Mate mod? The shiftmate costs around $35. You can get a 10 speed 105 cassette for $50 shipped from Probikekit.com. I would spend the extra $15 and do it right.

I've got a shiftmate on my set up with 10-speed Campy ergo shifters and 9-speed Shimano cassette and it works just fine.

Agreed but he'll also need a new 10-speed chain.

You're saying you want to use your 10 speed shifters with a nine speed cassette? If so, here's a possibility and it won't cost anything to try:

So do I and mine also works like they were made for each other. The Shiftmate is a very good way to get "incompatible" drive trains to work together perfectly and there is no downside.
