so i picked this up for my girlfriend today.



the parts are kinda beat(makes sense) but the rear derailleur is shot!. i think, the pulleys have no teeth on them(plastic, ugh) and it won't hold tension. i tried fiddling(bad idea) and now it's way loose. any tips for at least tightening this thing up?



also. i'm gonna look into tomorrow but do you fellas know how easy it would be to get this replaced? like, the whole derailleur? is it something any bikeshop worth it's salt would have or are these kinda rare. i know peugeot parts aren't the easiest to find sometimes with the french sizing and all.

Seems to me that if the pull ratio is correct, just about any dérailleur ought to work.

The bike looks to have downtube shifters, if the rear shifter is friction most any ol' rear derailleur will work (and likely work better than that one ever did )-

Not all jockey wheels have teeth, and most are plastic. Disconnect the cable from the derailleur by loosening the pinch bolt. Push your shifter lever all the way forward. Reconnect the cable at the pinch bolt, trying to keep the cable as taut as possible. Then make sure your limit screws are set properly.

As mentioned, you can replace it with nearly any modern derailleur, or a vintage one. Check ebay, you can find a decent one cheap, if in fact you end up replacing it.

Do not waste your time on that old Simplex Delrin RD. Even if you get it to work the jockey wheels will soon self destruct. The "classic" replacement for these back in the day was with a Suntour GT or V-GT model, although just about any RD will work. Post a WTB in the C&V forum or scour ebay for something cheap.
