I had a question for Stapham, too:
You keep calling roads "tarmacs". What do you call the big landing spaces at airports, then? (We call those tarmacs in the US)

As an offroader- If it ain't mud or hardpack- Its tarmac. Smooth roads are made of Tarmac but most of the ones I ride on are Grit and Tar- and holes- and no edge so the verge encroaches onto the road and the manhole covers don't fit.
Our Main Airport runways are made of Concrete. And if you saw the state of Tarmac after a hot day in our Summers- you will be gratefull that they are.
So sorry about using different terminology but with "Posh" and "Becks" over with you- You will get to realise that we do call things by different words. Although we are probably calling the Beckhams by the same name by now.
