good ways to track trainning

i would like to track my training. i am not a big fan of speedometers. i would however like a heart rate monitor that tells me when i drop below a certain heart rate, and all that good stuff. i would also like to know what my heart rate is like on climbs and stuff like that. any suggestions for what to get.

If that's all you want to do, you have a wide variety of options. I like the polar stuff, but I use the 720i so that I can download it to my computer.

Oh, two more thoughts:

1) The chest-strap sensors are better than ones that are wrist mounted.
2) If you think you will work out around others, you might want to get a "coded" transmitter. That allows your watch to pick up your sensor and not the one of the guy next to you.

Not sure I understand the question. Are you looking for a heart rate monitor that allows you to download data to your computer?

Spend the bucks on a Polar S720. I bought one in '05 and have been competely happy with it. Although im wondering if there is a firmware update that lets the wrist unit show distance covered in real time. Aside from that small issue, the rest of what the unit does is a data junkies wet dream. I use an IR interface to download data into the Polar PC software. I've just signed up for Training Peaks self coaching and it lets me upload the polar *.HRM files into the daily logs. Once i get used to TP, I think my BikeJournal.com log will be history.
