Duh I'm an idiot

That three speed hub form the Fair Lady was made in Austria not Germany as I incorrectly wrote all over this board. Any info on these is appreciated such as the reliability and things like that. I've yet to take the axle out to see how bad the bearings and cones are but I'm not too optimistic if they look like the rest of the bearings and cones I have encountered on this bike. Nice thing is the chrome is cleaning up very well the fenders look really good but the braces are really rusted and pitted so I don't know what to do about those cause they are riveted not screwed in they are the original 59 fenders the rims are cleaning up nicely too although there are a couple of bent spokes but if I part this thing out someone else can true them up.

Hi Stringbreaker,

I had mentioned in an earlier thread that the three speed internals were interchangeable. Someone on another thread said they weren't. OK, I will concede that the Shimano 3.3.3 is not interchangeable with the others, but I did a bit of research.

Glenn's Complete Bicycle Manual says this:

The following step-by-step illustrated instructions cover disassembling, assembling, and adjusting a Sturmey-Archer AW, Styre (sic) Schwinn-Approved Styre (sic), Brampton and Hercules three-speed rear hub. These hubs are identified by name stamped on the hubshell and brake arm. All parts of these five hubs are interchangeable.
So.....I guess the hub is Steyr made, being from Austria.

Here is a link to some photos on the Sturmey Archer site:

It says the Brampton and J.C. Higgins (Steyr) hubs were made starting in the fifties when S-A's patents expired.

Could you drill out the old rivets, then re-rivet them with new braces?

i could but I'm going to sell them and I really don't want to put any money into them unless I was going to keep them for myself.
