I'm totally lost when it comes to bikes under $500...

My brother is currently looking for a mountain bike, and I've found a 2007 Hardrock Sport for $300 at my favorite LBS which gives free lifetime tuneups, real ones. He's going to use it for general farting around to class at college and for mountain biking about once a week during the year. The stuff that he'll do will be totally xc, no jumps more than even a foot or so. Would this bike be able to last him four years through college?

I've got a friends with a rockhopper and stumpy and know they hold up really well, but I really just don't know bikes under $500 unless they are used. Do you think this Hardrock would do the job? And is it a good price?

definitely. I have a HR Sport disc and I love it. It will certainly get him from A to B. Its a solid bike, and it will certainly last him a while, especially if he mostly stays on cement. IMO, the Hardrock is a better choice than any other bike out there for the price. As for whether it would last 4 years, the Hardrock has an overwhelming reputation as a bike that just won't break.

I think that a rider like your brother is exactly who the hardrock was made for.

I am looking at one too. Found it on craigslist for 140$. I'll go take a look at after work.
