I think if you're going to do it, you oughta go all out and get discs front and rear. I use my rear brake heavily, and I enjoy the extra power.

Pleny of people run that setup - some can't run a disc on the back, some are saving up for a second disc, and some people just prefer it that way. You will want to carefully dial in the rear V or get a strong set so that the power is a little more balanced between front and rear. There's nothing wrong with the setup, but Im personally would go with discs front and rear.

Well superjoe, it can be done, but the idea (and in all practicallity) it makes sense to go disc up front. If you're riding properly, you should use more front brake for controlled stopping power. Say, 60-70% front.
A lot of people don't know this and as a result can't ride as fast as others. Why you ask? You can only ride as fast as you know you can stop. If you know how to stop quickly, you'll push yourself to ride faster. With confidence, comes speed!

I've been running Avid mech's up front and XT V brakes in back on my hardtail since last fall. It's a great, economical upgrade that really improves performance. It makes sense since about 70-80% of your braking takes place up front and V brakes are still pretty powerfull (although they will fade sooner). The only shortcoming of the disc brake, I think, is properly re-aligning it in the caliper after a tube change for example. I find it never re-aligns exactly and I have to tweak it a little.
