Whew what a hot one!
I liked the pics I took on today's ride. I've mentioned to a few here why I won't take Gina on GMR rides during the hot months. I always tell how she struggles in the heat. She even struggles on the flat course when it's hot. I can't imagine what would happen if she were to try GMR on a hot day. I think these pics say plenty.
Yes Nachodude, same pics, different forum!
Well on Saturday, she struggled bigtime. We were on our usual 42 flat ride. I held a decent but ez pace knowing she struggles in the heat. On the return, she totally pooped out. I pulled her of the trail, sat her in the shade and finished the last 10 alone. I was to return with the truck. I busted my hump back in the heat to keep her from staying out there too long. I got back to the firestation (leaky faucet) only to find her in the shade with two guys drinking cold softdrinks. WTF! I got closer and realized two of our buddies had ran into her at the parking lot and offerred to stay with her till I returned.
She cut the 42 miler at 34 with a 16.3 average. She had enough for the day. I was scared to take her out today again because of the heat, but she insisted. A good dinner and plenty of fluids so maybe she would be ok. I started out today at a slightly easier pace today hoping to conserve her energy for the return. A couple of miles into the ride I realized I had forgotten to refill the Gatorade baggy. Oh yeah, I forgot the Clif Bars too. I had some powder so I'd mix it for her. I'll just lick my arm to replace the salt I lose. We stopped at a small store for the bars.
We stopped for a couple of minutes at the Honda Center stop when BF'er Chuck5.2 comes flying up with another rider at 26 mph. He saw us so stopped to chat for a minute. He was doing a short fast ride but decided to slow it down and extend his ride to the coast. He rode our wheels as I set the pace for Gina. He offered to pull but I wanted to control the pace so I declined any help. He sat in the back restinghis legs after some hard efforts. I knew what he was doing. Resting his legs for the fast ride back with the tailwind.
We got to the beach and stopped. He continued to the snackbar and offered a Gatorade, Heck yeah! He returned with an ice cold G-Ade. Wouldn't take the money for it, nice guy! I gave it to Gina and mixed the powder for myself. He took off with the wind while we sat and talked with BF'er Lucas for a while.
After our chat, we headed back. Gina was doing fine till right before the HC. She was overheating again so I asked if maybe we should replay yesterday's ride. She insisted on completing the ride. We stopped for a few minutes while she covered herself with water. I had never seen her do this before so I knew she must have been hot. We continued after the soakdown and a few pix. I held the pace down on the remaining few miles. She said I could pick it up a bit but I kept her down to be safe.
She finished the ride stronger than the day before. I'm shocked that she did better the day after a big sruggle. She finished the 42 with a 16.8 average. Day before was 34 with a 16.3. Hmm, maybe she was hiding some synthetic testosterone somewhere! I've heard they do that in the TDF!
I just wanted to post the pics cause I think they show how much of a struggle the heat can be for her. I'm proud that she was enough of a trooper to come back and finish the ride and do better a hot day!
For those of you that maybe don't believe me about the struggles in the heat, here's some proof!
First pic. Chuck5.2 checking his top speed of like 48 mph
Early miles, Gina still smiling and somewhat fresh
Next pic, same spot on the return, late miles, not so fresh with soaked head
Last pic, puckered sweaty sour face but insists on battling the heat!

Great pics Mr. B!
It was really hot out there yesterday and today...tell Gina that I can empathize! I really struggle in the heat as well. George and I did an 86 miler down to Las Pulgas and back from HB yesterday afternoon and then the plan was to do GMR repeats this morning but damn, it was hot out there. I struggled the whole way up with overheating and when George turned around and found me after he went to the top, I was still 2.5 from the summit of GMR and had gone through both of my bottles. I sent George down so he could come up again, finished the climb after cooling off in the shade for a bit and decided that I was done for the day and that I'd SAG for him instead so he could descend East Fork and climb hwy 39. This heat really zaps me too.

You guys are far too hearty for me... in heat like this I do "stupid fixie tricks" (trackstands, skids, and the like) in the street outside of my house for 30 minutes and I'm done for.

Kudos to Gina for sucking it up.. and good for you to watch out for her, Beanz.
I had a major heat issue yesterday, too. I was fine until we got to climbing PV East at midday. It was at Mile 65 or so of our century when I started getting the first signs of heat exhaustion. We were scheduled to do Loop repeats but ME and jschen took pity on me and we went back down to the coast where it was much cooler. We still got in nearly 4000 ft (how'd we do that?!) and finished strong, but that heat just sucks the life outta you.

I did a IRLR mountain bike ride yesterday. It didn't start until 9:30a, way too late. After 1.3 miles we had a woman go down with the first stages of heat exhaustion (she was a newbie rider and very unprepared). 2 docents had to escort her back to the parking lot and get her taken care of. Another docent and I continued the ride. By the time we got to the turnaround I was dizzy and nausea, definitely signs of dehydration. Of course didn't help I did the CB century Saturday and now out doing a ride in heat. I really need to know my limits and pay attention to my body. Not worth getting that sick and paying the price.
Anyway everyone got back. Later we went to "John's" a local's restaurant and I sucked down ice teas for hours.
I am so looking forward to Fall and cooler weather!

Beanz I paid big time for trying to hold that hammerheads wheel for 10 miles yesterday. Despite riding your wheels to the beach the heat got to me at about mile45 and I struggled the last 10 miles home. The heat hit at about the stadium and just got worse the closer I got to Yorba Linda. I drank 6 liters in 56 miles and was still down 7 lbs when I weighed myself at home. Way too much fun for a Sunday !

Sorry to hear about her struggling in the heat, Beanz. I do too, although I don't look as hot as she does when doused with water. Tell her to WEAR A BANDANA (advice I gave to Joy yesterday when she was overheating). Then, when you get to a stop with water (or water and ICE - which is preferrable), soak the bandana in water or ICE water (again, preferrable), as well as your jersey. Keeping the head cool will bring your temperature down a bit. If all else fails, abort the ride if she ever experiences nausea, chills and stops sweating. You cannot take those symptoms serious enough as heat stroke can strike suddenly and kill a person just as quickly.

hello
Although my Adidas cycling baselayer kept me feeling dry under my tuxedo on Saturday it was miserably hot out in Huntington Beach on Sat during my step daughter's wedding. Even the outdoor/indoor reception later that day on PCH was no relief from the heat. I stayed away from alcohol for the most part and just stuck with plain ole water all night......When I loosened my collar and unbuttoned my tux shirt people were asking me what was the heck that gray mesh thingy I was wearing underneath....

I did abort her ride on Saturday when she started heating up. I really didn't want her to go on Sunday knowing what happened Saturday and knowing that it was going to be another hot one. She insisted so I kept my eye on her!
Sounds like everybody had a hot one! Like Pam, I down the drinks all night after the hot rides. Water Tea, Diet Coke, Gatorade, Everything!....no beer!

Thanks for the advice Mary I'll try that. Anything to keep her cool!

And that's where great minds apparently differ.
