Ben's Deep V wheels vs. machine built Deep Vs from LBS?

Any opinions about wheels from Ben's? Do they hand build all their Deep V's? I'm faced with waiting for Ben's to get new stock on black Deep Vs or buy a set of machine built Deep Vs from LBS. (Formula Hubs)

Ben's didn't build me such a good Velocity Fusion... took it to the LBS wheelbuilder to get trued and he said every spoke was too loosely tensioned. Just get a handbuilt from your LBS.

P.S. Aeroheads are better

My Deep V/Formula wheelset from Ben's is doing fine. I need to true them up a bit but I expect that of any new wheelset.

I have some deep v's from Ben's, too, and after about 1000 miles they're still rolling perfect.

It seems like every other online fixed gear wheel seller is trying to pass off machine-built wheels as hand-made, and I figure that Ben's is going the same thing.

+1...I'm so sick of threads about prebuilt wheels being sucky. Learn to true and tension people...then you don't even have to consider build quality. Its not hard (about as hard as tuning a guitar) and is the solution to virtually every wheel durability issue. Or have you LBS stress relieve and tension the spokes. If its done right, it should only have to be done once.

My biggest reason for resisting prebuilts is the lack of double butted spoke build ups. Seems like they're all straight gauge or aero at best.

i was just watching them handbuild a few sets yesterday, if that answers your question.

bens > all other online shops

but i'm also pro LBS, luckily i get the best of both worlds with bens.

Amen to double butted spokes....but I thought you avoided prebuilts because the wheel-building machine permanently deformed your rims

"hand built" doesn't mean **** if the builder doesn't know what they are doing and take pride in their work.
i've seen a couple "hand built" wheels that were not stress relieved properly from OBSs.

the guy over at prowheelbuilder.com seems good (see interview at fgg). but i don't know that i agree with his 'high tension is better' argument.

That's a smaller reason.

It goes:
1. Satisfaction of building my own wheel
2. dbl butted spokes
3. Avoid wheel molesting machine.
