I wonder how difficult those rides were? Sounds like clumsy tourists to me

This has NOTHING to do with DH!

I recently went hiking on Haleakala and saw these tours. This is not some "extreme" downhill event.

They put a bunch of fat tourists on okay hardtail bikes and have them ride down on the road, under supervision at speeds of no greater than 20 mph. The accidents are probably due to idiot tourists not knowing how to use bikes, poor maintenance, or both.

Here's a link to one of the tour operators:

So someone forgot to tell John Q. ******Tourist that if you spinny wheely things go too fast just mash down the shiny metal chicken bone looking things so as to make with the stoppy stoppy...

Darwin's not spinning in his grave... he's laughing his dead ass off.

I agree with Zinn-X. Me and my dad did one of these tours last summer. We were both extremely dissapointed. The bikes given to you have a governing mechanism which will not let you travel faster than 25mph or so. So in no way would any of these accidents be anybodies fault but the rider.

there is some other tour service where they rent litespeed road bikes and climb *up* the mountain. there's a support vehicle and really experienced guides to go along with it. i think it's like $250. alas, i was not in good enough shape to try this the last time i was in hawaii, but next time!

whoops... this is the mountain bike forum. nevermind!

Roberta Blake of Amherst, Ohio, was killed last week when she lost control of her bicycle while on a tour and crossed the double yellow line into the path of an oncoming van owned by another tour company.
In March, a 44-year-old woman was killed when she went off the roadway, and in November, a man died after falling off his bicycle, the National Park Service said.
Two people were also seriously injured in May in separate incidents when they ran off the road and crashed into rocks. One was an experienced downhill bike tour guide.
In every single one of these, the people veered off the road into rocks, vans, etc. so I'm sure its OK if you play it safe.

Yep, I've done it. Also disappointed in how controlled the descent is. Next time I go, I'll be climbing and descending it on my own so as to be able to enjoy it to the fullest.
