Wanting to upgrade wheel sets - Tricross
I just bought an '08 Specialized Tricross Sport Triple. Its spec-ed out with Specialized forged alloy hubs and Alex Ace-19 rims. I'm thinking these aren't the greatest setup - but I'm not sure. I'd like to upgrade to someting lighter. I'm not planning on doing any CXing - the bike is for commuting and wet road training rides. What wheel sets would be a nice upgrade? Hopefully, I can keep it under $400-$500 bucks. Also do CX bikes have just beefier road wheels or is the dropout spacing wider and therfore its like a tall skinny mt bike setup?

I have a 06 Comp version and I ended up putting some Mavic Open Pro's with Ultegra hubs from Performance Bike for $220. Sweet wheels for the price. Any normal wheel will work with this bike. Yes, most CX bikes have a beefier wheel. Normal road wheels work just fine on them though.

The dropout spacing on the tricross is 130mm which is standard road spacing. Any set of "nice" road wheels will be a good upgrade and a lot lighter too.
Another nice upgrade if you're riding mostly on pavement or not riding steep hills is to change the cassette. I weighed the cassette that came on my bike (2008 tricross sport) and it weighed 433g. A decent road 9spd cassette will probably weigh around 230g.
Swapping the wheels, tires, and cassette on the bike can drop about 3 lbs off the weight of the bike. Then put the stock wheels back on to go beat them up in the dirt. :-)
