SRAM X5 shifters?

i was wondering if anyone can tell me if there's a way to change the shifting format on the X5's... i mean, say i use the thumb shift thats layed up forward, this would shift the gear indicator # to 3.. whereas, if i used the recessed thumb shift, it would go down to # 1...

now the thing is, when i do the same on the shifter for the rear cassette, it's the opposite... if i thumb shift the lever that is up front, the gear indicator decrease.. and if i thumb shift the recessed lever, the indicator # increases...

is this how it's suppose to go?.. just wanted to make sure... cuz, i sometimes get confused that the way the left hand shifter shifts is the opposite from the right side...

sound stupid?..
