In-N-Out Burger is ok if you ride 32 miles to get it

I recently moved to Berkeley, CA from Western, NY and I sold my car to get here. Needless to say my legs have been getting a workout. I eat pretty healthy but get cravings for INO every once in a while (I think INO is one of the reasons I moved here). Well there is no INO in Berkeley so I came up with a pretty sweet bike ride to get from Berkeley to the Oakland INO. Today it took me 32 miles for the trip, the first time I did it I got lost and went a bit different way and it ended up being a 40 mile bike ride on a single speed, heavy as hell, Puma folding bike with 24" wheels and knobby tires! I had a Dahon Jack this time (still need a better bike).

If you want more info on the ride plus the ability to see the Bike ride in Google Maps or Google Earth here is a link to my post on the Google Earth Community page: https://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/showflat....page/0#1033470

Any ideas on how many calories I burned? My GPS shows: trip odom 32.4 (trip could be about another 1.5 miles long because of when I couldn't get a signal in the Posey Tube), moving avg 13.1, mov'n time 2:28. I consumed about a 1000 calories at INO. Oh and I weigh about 180 if that helps.

Thanks.

You probably burned maybe 1500 calories.

Along these lines ... when I lived in Winnipeg, and had no car, I had to walk 1 km to the grocery store to get my groceries, and 1 km back carrying my groceries. I walked up and back a few times a week, and could only buy what I could carry.

Doing that really helped me control the amount of junk food I bought. When I had to buy a bag of kitty litter or other heavy items, I could only bring home the stuff I wanted for the next couple meals. It often came down to a choice between junk food and supper.

I was a good 10 lbs lighter back then, than I am now. Over the past few years, it has been too easy to pick up junk food, although more recently I've been on a more restricted diet again for a slightly different reason.

It's a good idea to walk or cycle to get your meals!

Try this link for calories burned:

https://www.kreuzotter.de/english/espeed.htm

By the way, I wish their chocholate shakes would be offered in a larger size.

i doubt it. what did you eat specifically. most people have no idea how many calories are in crap fast food. a mcdonals large fry has over 400 calories in it. doesnt include the drink and sandwich most people get to go with that. later.

Here's a pretty good site for figuring out how much you consumed:

https://www.nutritiondata.com/

It has info about various fast food places, including this In-N-Out Burger place (I'd never heard of it before). Looks like their cheeseburger is 480 calories, and the fries are another 400 calories.

Most people may not but I checked the nutritional info at: https://www.in-n-out.com/nutritional_info.asp
I had a Double Double with Ketchup and Mustard instead of the Sauce (590), French Frys (400, I didn't eat them all but I used a little ketchup), Diet Coke (0). So I consumed 990 Calories, give or take.

Thanks for the link, (Thank you too Machka!) I stopped getting milkshakes there when I saw they have 690 Calories! I can't imagine what a large would have.

Mate it depends on your goals.

If its weight loss then i would say no,

But if its general fitness then go for it, it wont affect your ability to get fit eating any kind of food.

I tried to order a large shake at In-N-Out and they only have one size. What a bummer. If you like milk shakes, go to Soup Plantation. All you can drink. But you have to make it yourself.

Watch it blasphemer. You are treading on the holy ground of In-N-Out cuisine. With matters of faith such as this, one must forget conventional fast food wisdom. If I ride as many days of the week as I visit INO then I can safely and guiltlessly gobble down the perfection that is "double-double." No if only they would bring INO to Colorado...

On that note, I am a little ashamed to admit that whenever one of my group of friends has a direct CA/AZ to CO flight there is a standing rule that the returning party MUST bring back specially wrapped double-doubles. 5-10 minutes at 400degrees, perfection...

had one 3 days ago, thanks Marc! ;-)

I had my first INO burger in Vegas....it was awesome!!!....double-double animal style....had a single animal style for dessert!!...if I lived near one of these places I would be huge!!!...riding to eat one would help, but the ride home would suck with one of those grease bombs in my stomach!

It's probably good I have no car and have to ride my bike to get to INO otherwise I'd be huge too! I'm proud to say I haven't eaten McDonald's since I moved out here. Once you have a double double a Big Mac isn't the same.

Enjoy your burger and milk shake. If you're riding that far, eat them both; just don't do it every day. If you decide to turn pro or shoot for the olympics, then you might want to change this, until then, life is to short not to occasionally enjoy some chili-fries.

Bikes: 8 bikes - one for each day of the week!

Back in the early 90's, I had an In N Out just around the corner from my house. We would ride this huge loop, then get some burgers to go, with the box resting on my aero bar.

God bless INO and Greg Lemond, for his aero bar.

Lon Haldeman loved milkshakes during his early Race Across America (RAAM) days. Reporters were giving him a hard time about his food choices until determining he was burning 9,500 to 10,000 calories per day in the saddle!

Bikes: one for everything

prolly once a week is good to do this, but every other day prolly not. If so, which up to like subway or something along those lines. INO is great, my normal order is 2 double doubles, fries and shake. But thats me and I go there like once a month.

My favorite way to get the fries is to ask for them to be "Light". They remind me of the fries from the County Fair I went to as a kid. I just wish they left the skin on the potatoes. I've been craving INO for a week now, just haven't had the time to make a trip to get it. Hmm I could walk a 4 mile round trip to the INO at Fisherman's Wharf after I get out of work today. Tempting!
