I outgrew this winter bike a few decades ago but still riding in the winter. Now riding a "Breezer" "uptown 8" internal eight speed hub, fenders, front hub in a generator. It's heavy but has served me well for a little over 7000 miles now.

i am glad winter is almost over because i think my winter bike is in need of some oil. possibly some new bearings and a new paint job. plus i think the brakes need to be greased. they seem to be sticking and i am pretty sure it is not the cables.

No reason to wait before you grease and oil is there? The paint job I can understand...

my oiling can is hiding out in a snow banks outside. in order to grease everything i would have to take it inside and i don't have a whole lot of room in my work area right now. i think it would just be easier to wait a couple of weeks.

I also received that small clip that you holds your u-lock on your bike, but the thing didn't last a week!

If you're running a rear rack, you could try using these. Of course, it only works if you're using only one pannier, or just a trunk bag. They come in a set of three, but I couldn't source them in North America, so I ordered them from Wiggle in the UK.

Yea, most of the lock mounts I have seen don't seem very sturdy. I'm a little surprised this one has lasted as long as it has. Sometimes I just throw it over the handlebars.

Nobody makes a decent lock mount; I'm thinking there's a market for a competent machinist to run up a bunch of 'em.

Here's how I carry mine:

By happy accident, the Kryptonite fits right behind the headtube with only about 2mm of play.

Oh yeah.

That's the winterwhip. Stupid photobucket, the photo makes it look all squashed and stretched. It's actually a XL sized frame, a tick over 21".

That's a good idea. Looks like it would be a pretty sturdy place to keep the lock. Do you have water bottle mounts on the bottom of the down tube or did you figure out a different way to attach it? I'd like a cage there on my city bike but I haven't come up with a brilliant idea to get it there yet.

Here is my current winter bike. A 2008 Raleigh Mojave 8.0 with fenders, studded snow tires, rack, bag, etc. The beast weighs in over 42 lbs so boy does my road bike feel light on the days I can get it out.

Sippel, the Spec. Crossroads came with those mounts in place. No idea what year it is, I bought the frame for $40 and put the Karate Monkey fork on... I suppose I have about $150 in it, which is why I work at a bike shop. The lock location was just a happy accident, as it turns out the standard Kryptonite fits there perfectly with about 1/4" of slop. Out of the way, relatively rattlefree and E-Z on, E-Z off.

It's been a good bike. When I mounted the front fender, I didn't have a good choice of stays and it's a little bit close to the front tire. I end up scraping off some of the snow and getting my feet dusted with it, but I'll eventually put longer stays on and then she'll be proper. Been totally trouble-free, no mechanical difficulties this winter. Gearing has been spot-on, that 22T small cog has been a lifesaver a few times and I can actually *just* pull my biggest gear on a long shallow downhill.

Icicle the Bicycle. Summertime rain bike, too, I suppose.

started rebuilding my winter bike today after i broke the chain in the same spot twice and the derailer once. found a surprise in the bottom bracket and had to drag out the welder to fix some of my lazy tack welds. ended up spending 3 hours in total fixing and replacing parts on it.

That looks like an AMAZING trip! It looks like you did it alone? How did you plan it so that you would always be in terrain passable by bike? Following the highways?
