Schwinn Mesa GSX Upgrades
Would like to upgrade my 2000 Mesa GSX MTB to a 29'er. The bike is 15" . Which shock, rim with disc brake ass'bly should I get but not break the bank.
I would also like to get a longer handlebar gooseneck and seatpost that leans back a little.
Can I also get a recommendation for a Gel Seat?
Jeff

Bikes: 2006 Windsor Dover w/105, 2007 GT Avalanche w/XT, 1995 Trek 820 setup for touring, 201? Yeah single-speed folder, 199? Huffy tandem.

Will the rear end of the bike even handle a 29" wheel, a frame made for 26" is likely going to be to tight of a fit? I would think 15" is a pretty small frame for 29" wheels. Why exactly do you want to change?

I have a mid-90's Scwhinn Mesa GSX cro-mo with RockShox. Actually, I have two of them, one 17" and one 19". I'm not sure why you would want 29" on it. I don't think you'll find a cheap fork with disk set-up that you would want to use. What kind of headset do you have? You may have a threadless head set, but mine has 1-1/8" threaded so it would require a new headset if I changed the fork.

Would like to just upgrade the front end not the rear if that is recommended. Also interested in raising the handlebars up 4-6 inches to meet the height of the seat which is high up already.
Would like a recommendation for a Gel seat that won't break the bank and a shock absorbing seatpost as well.
This is a great bike that just needs a little tweaking to work best for me. I am trying to make it more of a hybrid with the mtb features rather than taking my old 27" Giant and spending a ton of money on a 2o year old bike.

There are plenty of road slicks out there for 26" mountain bike rims. That, along with a new saddle, suspension seatpost (advantages of those are very iffy from my experience, but to each their own), and a stem with a higher rise sounds like what you need to be looking at to get what you want out of this bike.

The headset is an "aHeadset NT-TG" and the word Tange is on it. If I could get this raised a few inches that would help a lot. I am foregoing the 29" wheel, etc. Though I would like to add disc brakes eventually...

The headset says AHeadset NT-TG and Tange on it. Would like to raise this up a few inches. Will be foregoing the 29" dream. Would like disc brakes on this as well eventually.

Your bike uses a threadless headset, I believe a 1 1/8." I assume you mean you want to raise the handlebars some, to do that you need a stem with more rise. You would need to determine how much forward extension you need, how much rise you want relative to your existing stem, etc. You also need to factor in the stack height of your existing stem vs. stack height of whatever stem you buy. Stack height is how much space the stem takes up on the steerer tube. You can manipulate by adding spacers, taking spacers away, etc. The bottom line is that you want the bars at a certain height and with a certain amount of forward extension. Here's an example of a stem with quite a bit of rise:

This Nashbar stem is cheap and ugly, but it might do what you want. Or you can search for other stems that would better suit your needs-

Thank you Brother. I went out and got an extension and all is good!
